Discussion / Re: reaction fire fix?
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:45:40 pm »
Surely reaction fire isn't broken, not after waiting THIS long for 2.3...something that significant couldn't have been overlooked...you guys are just to careful. If so, sure hope there is an updated 2.3 with this mechanic fixed to work correctly. Anyhow, initial thoughts are 2.3 is a vast improvement in most aspects, however, what is up with countries loosing faith in you so quickly? The $ you get doesn't allow for FAST expansions, so for the first few months ( 2-5 ) your limited to having 1 base with aircraft abilities. I have been flying all over the world winning every terrorist action and shooting down every UFO I've seen, yet my countries attitudes funding me have gone from Pleased...to Neutral...are they that really THAT difficult to please, and don't allow you time to get up to speed? Especially with such LIMITED resources allotted to Phalanx...2.2 seemed to be a bit more forgiving...this seems a bit too BRUTAL an attitude towards the only defense program the earth has, since it's still in it's infancy at this point of the game. In terms of funds...is the earth THIS poor at this point in history, that they can't allow a few more credits per month to be allotted to the the only chance they have of surviving? I've seen more funds pushed by Gov's to crappy and unneeded useless programs, to research the lifestyle and breeding habits of some possibly endangered life-form, than what Phalanx receives for it's efforts to save the human species from being eradicated.  Anyhow, kudos to your continued efforts on this great game you Dev's keep working on, as a labor of love...many thanks guys!

8 hours to download? You must have one VERY SLOW ISP or connection...I downloaded the complete file in about 3-5 minutes.

This might help, if I understand you correctly that is. If you click on your soldiers buttons ( where you assign stuff such as reaction time shots ), on the far left one, if you click on it the choice of which attack you want to use ( Aimed shot, 5 round-burst, etc ) will become available. Click on which attack you want to use, then try and see if you can target an alien. If your just mousing over the alien before doing this ( red box around it ), you cannot target him. If I've misunderstood your question, I'm sorry, but this is about the only thing I can figure out that is happening with your issue. Maybe one of the Dev's can give you more input if this doesn't help you.

Unbelievable and GREAT news !  Thanks to all you hard working Dev's on this project...was beginning to wonder if 2.3 would ever see the light of day. 2 huge thumbs up and again many thanks !!

This material sounds like it also has real world potential for armor applications for infantry at some point. Being so light, with this amount of strength would make it ideal. Sounds like its electrical properties, would even keep infantry safe from electrical dangers of most sorts.

Well it sure seems, that if if isn't at least possible for something to work in the real world, then it hasn't got a snowballs chance at getting into AI. Perhaps I am wrong in that assumption on my part, just from the many posts that I've read, that is the impression I get. Which is why I was on the soap box, about it just being a game and being more relaxed creatively. The heck with it, I'm just an observer on the side-lines, I'll just be glad whenever the next stable release comes out...I'm sure it will be a bang-up job however it ends up.

Frankly, a defensive position ought to be included automatically as part of the entrance.

All too true, no military type installation with "anything" worth guarding, would leave the entrance to such a facility unmanned and unguarded. In the scenario of AI, it would be even more "unlikely" that any installation's entrance way would be left unguarded. Most likely a small garrison and some "heavy" weapons of some sort would be in place 24/7 to keep any would be intruders from invading the base.

Hey guys, only thing I can say, is why does everything that have to go into the game ( or any game ) be absolutely 100% feasible in the real world. It is after all just a game right? Not some type of real world simulation type thing with aliens invading us right? I can see trying to keep things somewhat realistic, so as to be "remotely" feasible, but don't know why it has to be worried about so emphatically. Most every computer game I've ever played has had much that could be "questioned" or looked upon with a raised eyebrow as to it's actual real feasibility.

And this isn't an attack on you Winter, it's just this is a game right? So what's the harm in having a little bit of things that make it look "cool" or just puts some zing / fun into it...it doesn't have to be 100% totally reliable and feasible...does it? Playing a game is supposedly about "escaping" from realism and having fun after all...which is why most of us do it...not to have a real life simulation...we get that without playing games :) From what I understand RL has awesome graphics, but in many ways other than that... it can really suck at times.

BTW, can't wait for the next stable version of AI, I'm sure that you Dev's are really going to be making it awesome.

Well...see you later then, but give the game and the Dev's a break. The game is far from finished and is still in the development stage. So just don't say it's a 'bad game' and run off, check back by at a later point and try an update, or maybe the finished game when that time does arrive.

Offtopic / Re: Global Warming gets the Cold Freeze
« on: June 27, 2008, 02:51:37 pm »
I promised myself I wasn't going to post on this subject...

Global Warming...lets see...the earth has become both cooler, and warmer throughout it's time of existence. We've had ice ages ( several ) and we've also had the reverse. I concede that the earth may at this point "possibly" be warming, but if it is, it's just part of the natural cycle of things. There is only one true source, that dictates how much heat, or how little that this planet receives...and that source is our star. The sun isn't a totally 100 percent constant heat source, sometimes it puts out a tiny bit more / less energy...it is not like a home heating system, where the temp is set and if you leave it alone it never varies.

The Sun varies in it's energy output, and even if it is very marginal in terms of a "galactic" scale, the effect wil indeed become felt here on this planet we are on. Our planets orbit around the Sun is also not 100 completely percent stable either, nor is it in a complete circle, hence the change of seasons. Being such, taken over the course of hundreds of centuries this can also somewhat change our weather patterns. Also, with the above in mind, it's pretty much been proven that the earth's magnetic field has reversed itself "many" times over the course of it's existence. Of course, that field and how it protects us from solar radiation is also a factor to consider...who knows exactly how such a reversal will effect global weather changes and patterns. From what I've read, based on the history / time-line of such changes, many scientist believe that we are "close" to a time for another such shift. Since we were not around, the last time to actually see what happens with the climate during such a shift...

Ok, for those of us living in the USA, take into account, that over the last 2-3 decades ( while not perfect ) we have made immense strides in cleaning up our own house. This country is cleaner now by far than it was just 20 years ago, yet even so...we are told almost daily, that by us living our normal lives we are destroying our planet. Perhaps so, perhaps not...but I refuse to believe that we humans just driving around going to work ( and other things ) are causing this massive ( over time ) climate change that is going to "doom us" all to oblivion. It's just fear mongering, by politicians wanting ever more power and control over the general populace. Fear is a HUGE motivator when it comes to controlling and manipulating people...a scared or worried person will almost give up his soul if he / she thinks it will save himself.

If the earth is indeed changing ( and I'm not convinced that it is ), it's most likely the result of a normal cyclic change based on what I've written above. A change we can have no control over...

Remember the "ozone" scare 15 or so years ago...and the huge hole over the south pole? Have we hear much about it lately? Oh...that's right by changing our "hair spray propellants" and our " Air Conditioning coolants", we helped to make that hole smaller...baloney. You know what produces Ozone right? Sunshine interacting with the O2 in the stratosphere split regular O2 and they reform into O3...Ozone...it's actually a bit more than that, but the point is to destroy the ozone layer completely...we'd have to "blow up" or turn off our sun. We know so VERY LITTLE about how this earth system really works, yet as humans we continue to think we know "everything." Heck half the time they can't even predict accurately what the weather 2 days from now is going to actually be doing...yet the so called "experts" know 100% for sure we ( humans ) are without a doubt causing our planet to warm up. LMAO...25 years ago, Ted Danson, said "All life in the Oceans will be dead in ten years"...guess he was just a "tad" wrong.

Holy crap, 15 years ago all the "experts" were telling me that drinking my morning coffee was bad for me. Now those same experts and others have switched their viewpoints, now they say actually it's now good for me, and that they were wrong the last time.

One thing is abundantly clear...I think we as a race know VERY little about what is truly going on, and even if we "did" know exactly what does and does not cause a certain thing...I doubt seriously that "we" could do very little one way or another to actually effect anything. This planet is way to large and complex, for us to think we can control it and what it actually does...hell we can't even control a simple rainstorm...forget thinking about controlling a Hurricane...how are we going to control the planet? And no...I'm not saying let's all go out and kill all the "whales", or lets go about mindlessly doing anything we might like to do an too hell with the planet and the consequences. I'm just saying, I think "much" of this current "doom and gloom" scenario could indeed be just "another" way those in power ( who ever and whatever they may be doesn't really matter ) can have more control over people.

One thing, that has for sure held true throughout human history, those in power "always" want more, and fear is just one tool that is used to accomplish such. Or course all of the above is just "my opinion" based on rational thought...which doesn't validate me as being right. However, fear has been used in the past to control the masses...it's being used currently ( in one form or another ) and will be used until the end of time, or the end of us as the human race. What better way to convince someone they need to "change" or behave in a certain way, then if they do not they are going to be the end of us...

No...A-Squared is a free-ware program that's just a spyware / tojan remover, it doesn't do anything for virus protection. However, Avast, and AVG, that I listed below it are both free anti-virus programs. If your using these...my "suggestion" is to be utilizing some browser other than IE, like Firefox...which keeps you much less at risk when web browsing than old IE does. The best way to avoid viruses, is use a browser that helps keeps you from getting a virus in the first place and that sure the heck isn't IE. :D

Zone Alarm is a fairly decent firewall BTW. As far as lagging a PC when a AV program updates...just disable automatic updating...just remember to manually update at least every few days to stay current.

EDIT: I've never used the AV your using Ariva, so I cannot comment on it one way or another. If your dissatisfied with it, for some reason... try using Avast instead.

Your welcome...while your still using McAffee...try and disable it if possible while playing any games...AV's can cause havoc at times when gaming if they are up and running. Not to mention that it is just using up resources your games could be utilizing.

In truth your right BT, I've just been told by people much more intelligent than myself that it can "possibly" happen...don't know, that's just what I've been told. Seems a bit "strange" and contrary to what the OS is supposed to be doing...but who the heck really knows...someone vastly more intelligent than me that's for sure. If Mac's could run "every" PC game out there...I'd never make / own another PC ever again LMAO...darn crappy Windows OS anyhow  :D

Like Andy said, your system cannot have a memory leak...that's basically impossible. A memory leak is the result of sloppy, or somehow "wrong" coding in some type of software / program / game. When running a program that has such a "bug" if you want to call it that...it just keeps using up more and more system resources / Ram until it crowds out, or  "possibly" even over-writes the area your Operating system needs to function...then you crash, lock up, BSOD or some similar situation happens.

Reformatting is "always" good, if you have everything backed up, and can spend the time doing so. Make sure you have your mobo ( motherboard ) drivers CD to reinstall all of those and if not...download them from your MOBO's manufacturer's website.

Try using these free programs before doing so...they might pick up some stuff that's slowing your system down.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

I've used the above program now for over 3 years...no ill effects. Make sure, the link your downloading from is the on the "right" over in the green area where it says "Download latest Version" under the green arrow. I once told my Dad to get this program and he tried to download off a link to some "pay" program on the left side. He tried 4 times and later told me that this program wasn't free LOL :)

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

I find spybot search & destroy isn't up to snuff as it once was...the above program updates almost daily with a new malware / addware / trojan database for the latest threats out there. For a free program it's a pretty good spyware removal tool.

Stop using Internet Destroyer ( ahem...IE ) and use Firefox, or another open source browser...you'll save yourself a TON of grief...to get it go here...http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

When your McAffee subscription runs out...if you switch over to Firefox, you can get by easily with either of these 2 free AV programs...and they use much less system resources than your current AV program. I happen to like Avast ( now that it's up to 4.8 ) better...but both are good. Make sure to uninstall McAffee...

http://www.avast.com/     Look for the free home edition !

http://free.grisoft.com/    Again...it's free :)

There are better AV's out there, but you have to pay for them...and most are resource hungry and bog your system down. These 2 are pretty light on resources...you can even use them BOTH together, even though it's not recommended.

Lastly...please get yourself some MORE ram...512 ram for any gaming is like basement level minimum...and RAM is dang cheap...go here...http://www.newegg.com/Index.aspx?Name=Home  to get just about any thing you might need :)

Once you get your ram ( however much ) and install it, manually set your page file to zero...restart your computer...then reset the page file to double the amount of ram you have installed and reboot once again.

If you have 1 gig of ram set the page file to 2 gigs...2 gigs of ram...set it to 4 gigs...that would be 4000 Megs. Your page file will now stay the same, never defrag...and Windows won't waste it's time resizing it all the time, which usually improves your gaming perfomance...usually.

There are more things I could tell you, but they involve messing around / tweaking the XP OS...try the stuff above and see what your results are :)
