PROBLEM SOLVED!

All you need to do to be able to save games while starting game as a normal user using 'ufoai' is:

After installing the game you have to switch to root and give full access rights to the folder /home/<user>/.ufoai to the user.

I did it using Gnome Commander starting it with 'sudo gnome-commander' and now I can save games without having to start the game from the root account

This is moronic that I have to start the game but writing 'sudo ufoai' rather than just 'ufoai' to be able to save. How am I supposed to create a menu or desktop shortcut, huh?
