i made it now.

Hard mode is done with lost only 1 Riflemen during a 3 h base defense fight in the beginning.

8 Stingrays
7 Bases
12 Colonels and a lot 200 Hitpoints + 95+ Strength and speed.
i nearly played all the missions manually.

the clue was really to fully overload them and play with plasma pistols and plasma rifles in singleshot til the ortnoks came.

Then i mixed 6 plasma riflers with 6 partical cannnoniers and each one got a plasma loaded gren launcher in the backpack.

got the savegame upped.

ps: thx for the hints, was a lot of fun and thrill trying not to loose any soldiers, i failed, i lost 1 riflemen :)

I planned to do this until its not more possible. No gren no main weapon and encumbered.  This improves my infight skills.

Now I restarted the 2.5 very hard campaign using pistols and flashbangs only. With heavy weapons and assault Rifles it was more difficult. The Speed they gain skillpoints is incredible. But i refused my original plan to Use the Standard pistol. IT was too Hard ^^ 20 hits per kill is good for skillpoints but Takes hours. ^^

For sure.

In General i Use murphys law, to anticipate what not should happen, and then i prepare for this worst case.

I am playing on pc since 1989, and I allways tried to push the Handicap to a maximum. The training effect is extreme high. ;)

But for this game u need some shooter experience.

Hide in the fog, but do never give them a Chance to Enter the fog alive.

Alllways Scout with the soldiers from the lines behind. Then u have more tu for the good Placed soldiers in your Front line. Do never Use your last soldier with tu for a shot u must hit. Allways have 1 in petto for such an incident, you cant predict.

I am a Fan of goldratt, and like this "theory of constraints " i play all games. A chain is not Stronger than its weakest link. So push all ranks in the Same Speed. Even try to Split the kills fair between
 All soldiers. Then you will reach low losses.

Grenades and gren.launcher are my Favorite weapons.

Try to lure aliens out of their save places while using max.hitpoints soldier out of the fog where He can only be sighted From a small angle.

When u got major+ ranks Use the Reaktion fire with heavy neddlers while crouched down with 2 or 3 soldier/camper. But do never Place such a Camper in a place, where an Incoming alien can shoot you without entering a place where He is seen From all the Campers u placed.

My other tactics is to fire 4 pistol shots right at the start of the mission, then just drop it to the ground. I will get it back at the end when all items will be gathered from the map. My soliders usually hold a pistol in the left hand right at start (save 2TU due to no need to take out), just one hold a Smoke Grenade.


why u fire 4 pistol shots in the start? with a target or just in the space??

i got a smoke in every left hand of my soldiers, to save the time units for taking it out of holster.

Ah ok, each action will gain skill not the number of bullets.

is it good to have 6 2. lieutenants and 2 lieutenantsafter 38 missions in very hard mode?

Now I had  a map (forgot the name) where I had to go down into a mine. It's like a labyrinth, with lots of holes to the different floors. It's hard to find cover and setting fire isn't that good as it seemed (a sheevar walked through fire to be able to shot one of my soldiers).
Do you have further tactics to reduce soldiers loss? Like throwing flashbang in hidden spots and advance with a scout to that spot?
What improved tactics you have?

the mine is not so difficulty, if you know that your nightvisiongoggles will work through the levels up and down.

u have to place your soldiers clever to scan the entire map.

when u know, where they are, u can reduce your loss to 0.

make only teams of 2 soldiers, because only 2 can stay next to each other.

try to use the shotscuts into the lower levels.

if u got heavy needlers, you can place 2 reactionfire soldiers for blocking all alien coming through a spezific way, even if the when an ortnok appears (i didnt tested this in the very hard mode.)

update,


i playing the very hard mode and til mission 39 it was not so difficult. i made 38 missions (48 sightings) without any loss and FULL encumbered (-12 TU).

for now i love the grande launcher ^^, the timer function is pretty cool to shoot round the corners.

I got 2 lieutenants and 6 2. lieutenants.



now the first ortnoks appear, and i have to use other weapons than machine gun + sniper. the last ortnok took 6 snapshot-machinegun attacks with crouch down on 15 meters. it seems, that machine gun with std. ammo dont hurt the ortnoks more than 1 hitpoint ^^

do someone know, which weapon deals most dmg to ortnoks and how many hitpoints the ortnoks got on very hard?
do they have more time units and armor too?

thx for the feedback.

I think its no problem with the not taking place promotion.

The stats will going high even if he is only a WO? So i dont take care of this ^^.


so i will have soon a team with soldiers running at the speed of slugs ^^ what a nice handicap.


i only can code 3d construction files and pieces and my contribute skills got their zenit at "asking question, the other wont do" to give good critics for improving the game.

let the aliens use flashbangs ^^ this will raise the handicap :)

is the penalty for killing civilians wrong calculated, or what hapenned here? ^^


the guy was the 2. wave of soliders i pushed in the rank.

1 made 8 colonels, then i put 4 into another team and take 4 of the new team into the old one.

so i had 2 equal strong teams and got lesser injuryproblems and could click the automatic button much more offen without any losses.

280 missions / 418 sightings i won, no one lost.

maybe it has something to do with the soldiers in the base, where the warrant officer was during rank pushin.


with bottleneck logic u come to the conclusion "best would be, all gaining ranks in the same speed. i think the weakest point of a chain is its qeakest part. So i decided to push all of them in the same speed."

Maybe u can help me with this problem, so i can start the very hard campaign and try with 0 losses on soldiers.
