I finally got it sussed. I copied the 0ufo.pk3 file into a backup area. Then I opened it with 7zip as suggested. There was no team_names.ufo file. There WAS however a team_human.ufo file. I opened it with word pad and sure enough found the names. I edited them, added quotations. Saved. Then I deleted the original 0ufo.pk3 file out of the UFO directory (leaving the backup incase of a problem). I then rezipped the ufo files with my edited version and then moved it into the UFO directory. Started the game and presto...the names I wanted are there. Thanks for the guidance.

UPDATE: I've been playing the game all night. Still 2.4, but...

The graphics are WAY better on the Dell 8400 than they were on the GX270. I'm seeing imagary that simply wasn't present on the other computer. Animated fountains, flowing water in streams. Lighting effects when the aliens fire their weapons. I never saw any of that on my old system. Even the soldiers look better.

Installing the drivers for the video card also improved my display for watching videos, so mucho thanks for the help guys. Now if I could figure out the team names problem in my other post.

I'm still working on it. The Windows Vista solution doesn't work for me since I'm running XP. I have literally tried copying the team names file to dozens of places around my C drive, in almost every UFO folder I can find, into the Users folders, even into the documents and settings folders. Still no luck.

You could try some hardware identification software. For example, hwinfo (http://www.hwinfo.com/), but there are many others.

I did that. I found the info I needed. Went to the appropriate web site. Downloaded and installed the drivers. Now not only does the game load properly, but my entire computer screen looks so much better. Thanks a bunch. I'm nominating you guys for 'Demi-God' status.

Thank you for your help. I downloaded the file. Edited it to my liking, and then found the directory you mentioned doesn't exist. Perhaps I should have mentioned that I was running 2.4. I even did a full hard drive search for a file by that name and got nothing but the newly downloaded file. So I then when into the directory where the file was supposed to be, I had to create the Ufo directory and copied the file there. It didn't work. I would upgrade to 2.5, but...I was setting up my new Dell 8400 and when I moved my older computer I accidently broke my USB wi-fi antenna so I can no longer get that computer online. I swear if it ain't one thing it's another. (Third antenna I've broken in the last year). And I can't get the game (2.4 or 2.5 to work on the Dell 8400 because of a graphics card issue. Someone...please shoot me through the head.

Well, then... I have a problem. I don't know what graphics card the computer is using and apparently it doesn't either. In the hardware manager the video card is shown as unknown with a yellow question mark. And it reports that drivers are not installed. I checked the Dell support site, but there are about 12 or so different drivers to download for various cards. My last option is to open the case and find out what's physically printed on the video card. Big pain in the butt. Odd thing is, that everything else seems to work. Just not the UFO game. Oh well, I may continue to play on my old system.

Discussion / Installling UFO on new(er) machine
« on: July 28, 2014, 03:45:33 pm »
Hello, I have a problem. I was recently 'gifted' with a Dell Dimension 8400 tower. I already had UFO: Alien Invasion installed my old Dell Dimension GX270. I'm in the process of migrating my computer stuff over to the new machine and wanted to install UFO. I saw that a newer version was available so I downloaded 2.5.
I installed it, but when I went to start the game, it aborted. I'm running windows XP Home Edition on the new computer. XP Pro edition on the old. So I uninstalled the game and downloaded the 2.4 version. Again, it aborted when I attempted to start the game. I don't know what the problem is. Any suggestions?

Is there a text file within the game listing the names of all the soldiers scientists pilots etc from which the game draws, and if so is it editable? I would like to go in and replace those names with my own custom names, instead of renaming them on the fly during game play. But I'm not sure where to look for the text file (if it in fact exists). Thanks in advance. Great game BTW.
