I always think of automissions as event when local army managed to get to site first and beat the aliens. After all, by time I start doing automissions, lasers should be army standard issue, and I already sold hundreds of plasma weapons, so I suppose local armies are bit better prepared than at the beginning of war.

IR goggles allow you to see through walls to limited extend.

UFO yards...depends, I have two, it's up to you. Hint, do not store EVER more than one fighter and scout for research, all space will be taken by undamaged harvesters from terrors.

And for tech tree...it goes Alien Origins>UFO theory>UFOs themselves.

Medikits are kinda working too good in this version, I have several times healed soldier from less than 10 hp (twice actually from 1 hp) up to full health during mission.

I've read that you shouldn't try to take on harvesters (maybe that's my problem), but I can't figure out how to tell one UFO from another.

Speed. Scouts move at 770 km/h, Fighters at 880, Harvesters at 1100. They also have different icon on geoscape.

Every craft has homebase assigned, and occupies its hangar even when in air. While launching aircraft without target is possible, you can't use it to exchange homebases. There is as far as I know no way to directly exchange homebases.

The 2.3 campaign seems too slow for me. I'm at january 2085-about 10 months of game time, playing on standard-and...I do about 20 missions per month, my soldiers level like crazy, I make tons of cash by selling alien artifacts, especially plasma blades, since every aliens seem to carry at least pair of those. And...nothing new. Aliens got plasmas, a few needlers and particle pistols, still the same old maps, same aliens, same UFOs. I don't even have anything to research, just waiting for Shevaars, XVI or particle guns.

A bit less missions would probably help, at this rate it just gets annoying.

They don't get any exp. All you get from automission is indeed UFO and mission success. As I said, the purpose is that people won't jsut saveload and autoresolve every mission.

Well, lower gains are the point of doing automissions...so if you want something, you gotta do the mission.

I do about 1/4 of my missions by auto, yet by the end of first year one of my soldiers already reached rank of Lt. Col., so it doesn't seem to be so big problem.

Patrol is possible, altho I'm not surprised you haven't found it. In hangar, next to aircraft status (in base, refuelling etc...) is little launch icon, then you can direct the aircraft to destination by left-click.

Particle hammer? Plasma blade should tear any UGV apart, unless it is coated with alien aircraft armor, making it almost immobile.

Judging by alien technology, they aren't fond of explosives, so we're left with two concepts. Anti-materiel rifle, that is pretty much particle cannon. I'd guess that in response on UGVs, they would deploy some EMP technology.
