Post by: Kronon on January 30, 2013, 01:15:25 pm
Hello to everyone !Only just found this great game and immediately carried away , with all due respect to the developers.Only question would be whether the soldiers would be given to the selection of a simple sound, or the shot ? Bekapcsolnom.Sokat mean I could not do that experience , at least I számomra.Ha up the question in the wrong place or not , please correct sharpening

Sent Kronon our answer in Private Message in Hungarian but I'm gonna share it with the rest of you either:

Kronon asked for soldier action sounds like "affirmative", "ready to go" and so on.

The problem with such a feature is that the game is speaking in about 30 languages, so we would need to record the sounds in every supported language in good quality, and it doesn't stop there. We would need several versions of the sounds so they don't get boring and female soldiers don't start speaking on male voices. While this could be possible on some major languages (English, German, Spanish, etc) it would be impossible for some others as there are not many people willing to contribute to an open source project for free. Another (less important but still) problem is that these sound files would significantly increase the size of the installer which is around 1.1G already. Most people would not like to download 1G more just for this feature.

That maybe would be possible to add additional downloads - just speech. But sounds for me would be the last thing i would care about .

It would be possible to release voice packs as unofficial mods. But i think there is currently no support for soldier/geoscape (research complete etc) response sounds in the game.

Soldiers voices increase the controle over your troop. For the moment there is only a difference between male and female, and eventually soldier and pilot, that's light. But with unit diversity increasing in any maneer, it would become a great help.

Anyway for the moment, this is for the soundmaster Crystan, what about a pilot crunchy radio voice wishing good luck at mission start ? - In english , why not, the "Firebird" for instance is an english name, who cares?

well, i would not be so sure i would want voice acting from the community, but some mod that allows to add such self-recorded sounds could be fun for a little while.
i mean, some points where the game would play a sound file with a specific name, and some documentation about what the default words would be.

e.g. when selecting a female soldier with a mouse, i might record some girl saying 'oh, a mouse!'

Nice example.
More seriously, you have the ideas and capability to make a complete mod . Please let me know if you do so some day :)

Soldiers voices increase the controle over your troop.
Sorry but just dont see how. Your troops saying affirmative and/or other similar words would increase control over them?

Thanks to ask me this :)
Indeed, it comes from my player experience at starcraft and other RTS (real time strategy games). Of course in those games you have to be so fast that hearing your troops responding or not, is crucial because you wont take the time to look at each soldier to know if he is up or down.

The idea here is not to save time, it 's turn based, but anyway to give the player some comfort by saving some checks. Just one example. Imagine you are pressing at key numbers to select your guys. Maybe if you do that fast and often you would prefere not to watch your keyboard to be sure you hadn't missed the key. A voice can help here, and in many other aspect that we could call "gaming comfort".

Hmmm... ;D
Its just me that i dont really care about sounds in games except for sounds that are important. Like sounds in stealth games or voices witch give you some information. But soliders saying affirmative just isnt priority for me. But thats just me. If people like talking troops thats fine with me.

So you mean each of your soliders would have unique voice and you would recognize them by voices? Thats a lot of different voices...

Not really all. But maybe some differences can help enough. Male/Female distinction could thus be exploited.

But you 've said an interesting thing that points here at what could be a real additional value to this great game. We maybe could give many voices but also many languages to our soldiers. You should have noticed that their names are already refering to different countries, like Garcia for Spain or south America etc... That would be funny to have this difference extended to the voices. But just for saying "Yes sir", not to make long sentences.

I'm saying an example:a basic auto exhaust, (basic sound ) use exhaust Rally ( Rally sound) and the happy people new voice. The solider is not better when  are talking , but there will be more fully virtual life? (sorry i use ace translator not perfect translation)
