Title: Voice messages after some events on Geoscape
Post by: Vassilios de Veritas on July 28, 2011, 08:40:56 pm
"Research has been completed/We've finished research" (same for production)
"Our labs are ready for new projects/One of our labs is ready for new projects" (when player have not set a new research for some time, like a reminder)
"UFO detected"
"UFO crashed"
"Our base is under attack!" (classic :))
"Alien operation detected"
"New message/New mail" (reminder to check your mail)
"Nation is pleased/not pleased (displeased)" (when relationship with any country changes)
etc.
Of course, some events happen really often (ufo detected), but i guess it is possible to set some timeout or "wait period".

What do we need:
A person with clear voice and some acting skills, plus a good microphone (or heavy editing).

The game support many languages so there won't be voice messages as we can't record every message on 20+ languages.

But we don't have to make messages on ALL languages.
All we need is technical basis, the rest will be just like with translations.
Also, this is merely a design detail, not something obligatory or important. In fact, user should have ability to turn them off.

There wont be any voice files ingame. Afaik the team discussed it a while back so its a not debatable thing. Sorry.

How about a more clearly audible/distinguishable sound? Like sirens/alarms for UFO sightings ala XcomApoc. I thought that was a nice touch. Not too sure what to do with completed research or manufacture though.

Oh... had a sudden brainstorm. How about, have a glowing icon (test tube for research, spanner for manufacture) pop up on the geoscape whenever a queue is complete. Clicking on the icon allows you to jump to the corresponding research/manufacture screen (pressing Esc after returns you to geoscape instead of base menu). That way, we don't have to search all over the globe to find "Manufacture Base 3" when the queue is up.

Oh. I'm just curios, what is the problem? Technical issue? Low priority/heavy time consuming? Probable copyright problems? You afraid that people might record something bad?
Yeah, i can imagine: Research is complete, commander! *fffaaaaaaart!*

Uhm these type of sounds already ingame (atleast in 2.4). Heres a list of events that trigger a sound:
Mail (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob;f=base/sound/geoscape/mail.ogg) (Info Mails, Research Complete, new research available)
Info (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob;f=base/sound/geoscape/info.ogg) (construction messages, aircraft OOF etc.)
New Mission (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob;f=base/sound/geoscape/newmission.ogg) (crashed ufo etc.)
Terror Mission (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob;f=base/sound/geoscape/alien-activity.ogg)
Ufospotted (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob;f=base/sound/geoscape/ufospotted.ogg)
Baseattack (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob;f=base/sound/geoscape/basealert.ogg)
Standard (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob;f=base/sound/geoscape/standard.ogg) (Standard Informations)

Well voice acting isnt the problem. We just dont want to have any voice samples ingame.
