Title: Norwegian translation
Post by: solbu on April 06, 2010, 06:35:34 am
Just wanted to inform the community that I'm in the process of creating a norwegian language file, that will be completed sometime this week. As of this writing I have completed 4.650 lines in two days. Total lines in the file are 15.770. 8)

feel free to submit work in progress patches, too - that way we can already prepare the integration of the new translation. and be sure to translate the ufopedia articles in the wiki.

I have copied the danish translation file (src/po/da.po), as much of the written languageis the same. It saves me a lot of work.
so a submittion will have quite some danish text in it.

I'll do that after I've completed the file.

I have completed translating the file down to and including alien_xvi_pre_txt

By the way, how do I submit language files?
(Remember, I'm editing a .po file.)

Code: [Select]
svn add src/po/yourlanguage.po
svn diff src/po > yourlanguage.diff

if you are using windows and tortoisesvn you can do almost the same (add, diff) with the tortoise context menu

submit that yourlanguage.diff file - to the patch tracker at https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=805244&group_id=157793&func=browse

svn add src/po/yourlanguage.po
svn diff src/po > yourlanguage.diff
I must admidt I didn't quite understand that part. I do not have a SVN-copy of the game, and as far as I'm able to tell there is no one else translating to norwegian.
Also, I do not have a sourceforge account.
Ok, I just created an account.. I'll try to add the file today, Friday.

if you are using windows
Fortunately I don't. 8)

But I first have to submit a no.po-file?

And I just completed monoknife_txt :)

I have tried that 4 times now. The file norwegian.diff does not show up, and I do not get a page saying anything about whether or not it was added, if I'm supposed to get one.

53% completed - 7342 lines out of 13917. 8)

The total line count are shrinking due to the fact that the danish template I'm editing have multiple lines, whereas I use longer lines it its place.

Hi, sorry for late response. I forgot to respond. ;)
I haven't been translating anything since sometime last year. Something happened and I had to focus on other things, and I simply forgot to continue. And it has since slipped my mind.

To translate, download the sourcecode, latest stable is fine, and find src/po/ufoai-no.po. That is the translation. Start from craft_upgrade_am_engines_txt, that was the last place I translated.
Also open src/po/ufoai-en.po as that is the english text. It sometimes have strings needed translation that the Norwegian file doesn't have. Often because they add text strings as the game development progresses.

I will start translating also, hopefully starting today. You might consider starting from the bottom of the file and going up, so we don't end up translating the same text, twice. :)

To do the actual translation I depend on translate.google.com (http://translate.google.com). It saves me a lot of work, and it usually is correct. Then I simply rearrange the text Google suggest, and sometimes replace a word or three, to have the sentences make more sence. Also beware of "orddeling" which Google translate seems to be fond of. :)

Solbu, actually you gave some wrong advices to your friend.

1. To translate short text (menus, messages) get the latest po file from Git (You don't need the whole game source just the po file (http://ufoai.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=ufoai/ufoai;a=blob_plain;f=src/po/ufoai-no.po). Use Poedit (http://www.poedit.net/) only for editing!

2. Translate big texts (those that only have some marker in po file (like assault_txt) in Wiki (http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/List_of_msgid)

3. "craft_upgrade_am_engines_txt" is actually a dead research topic, you shouldn't translate it (If you checked the wiki, it says "source text unfinished")

4. Read Translating (http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/Translating) article for details.

In case anyone is wondering, I have just started to continue the translation.
And I am using poedit as of now. Previously I have been using mcedit in a terminal.

I have marked all danish strings as fuzzy.
As of now, poedit states:
40% complete, 2918 strings, 1016 fuzzy, 733 not translated.

It is an old translation file, but I will be using this one for now. I can add the rest, if any, later on.

If you want to look at my progress, you can watch this page (http://ufoai.ninex.info/pootle/nb/ufoai/).
Status as of this writing is: 91% translated, 207 fuzzy strings, 40 strings not translated.

I have a real hope of completing this in a few weeks, this time. 8)
