Our aa51 has only 8 rockets now and it can change if gameplay balance requires it. Unfortunately the map of Missile Battery shows rockets too which can confilct with the real number of ammos scripted.

I would also note that aa51 launcher is installed into missile battery slots, I don't think they have such a standing.

Of course Winter has the last word on this.
And I really like your models! ;)

That's great, would make a nice prop for military base maps.

Mattn, do we have a geoscape model for the SAM Site yet? If not, sitters, it'd be great to have another one with a much larger missile chamber, if you've got the time?

If it's wanted for maps, I could rebuild it as a UFORadiant prefab without too much trouble (that is, if it was alright with Sitters). I really like the texture.
Title: Re: New models

that would be nice, too - as we would use this model in the base defense tiles later.

no, there is not yet a geoscape model for the sam sites. i hope willem is doing that one, too (a lot less in polycount and reduced to the main parts that are visible when showing small models on the 3d geoscape). but this one is for the menu display when equipping base defenses and it's perfect for this imo (and already integrated into the game).
Title: Re: New models
Post by: Mattn on December 27, 2009, 01:44:55 pm
btw. H-Hour - keep in mind that you have to split the samlauncher into a two part model if you make a prefab for it. (as  it is higher than on ufoai level)

Hey sitters, that's looking awesome. I'm sorry for not explaining this properly before (I've got a huge cold that's messing with my head) but what we really need is an enlarged version of the launcher for much larger missiles. Would that be possible? Thanks a lot.

We can incorporate external beam/cannon sites if wanted, but I don't think it's a good idea. Takes too much of the focus away from bases/interceptions.

. . . No. The Machine Gun fires 4.7mm caseless rounds. Those are 20mm shells for the SHIVA cannon.

I've had a busy couple of days and forgot to reply. Sorry.

The geoscape SAM site is great, happy to have it.

The radar dish doesn't feel quite right to me. A tower with a ball on the top seems like a better symbol for radar. However, if textured we might be able to use it for something else at some point, never can tell!

Hello,

the radar tower looks nice, the your radome (ball) looks different, being based on pentagon shape giving less geometric "depth".

However suggest increasing some number of pentagon or use skin to stimulate the ball surface

here is a wiki of an geodesic radome.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radome

I just happen to google for radome and found an "geometry" drawing of current radome manufacturer that might be useful. this web site has photograph of both pentagon based and triangular based (lot of details).

Considering this is going to be on the global view, where there will be countless other polygons being rendered, lit, etc, adding more is not a good idea, especially since this is going to be an icon, of sorts. I think its good the way it is
Title: Re: New models
Post by: Viento on January 12, 2010, 02:36:13 pm
Actually the radar station that I was guarding while doing military service had almost exactly the shape of the model. Don't change it, I think it looks perfect.

Title: Re: New models
Post by: Viento on January 14, 2010, 08:42:01 pm
It looks futuristic (and in my opinion quite solid, not just like a "tent" or just camoflage nets). Yet it doesn't look stable enough to survive an air-to-ground bombing by ufos (which sometimes happens in the game), so I think it fits quite well in my imagination. ;)

I have learn a lot last years, now i don't have much limits anymore with modeling.
Only always have the problem where I model for, ( games ) it must be so bloody low poly.

I more like model the details, then painting them,
especially with one material ( it looks 100 times better ).

Title: Re: New models

if you could do something about the crashed ufo sites that would be quite nice, too. maybe you can use the geoscape models from http://ufoai.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/ufoai/ufoai/trunk/base/models/geoscape/ - we don't need one for every kind of ufo - we just need a wreck of an ufo in a form that nobody can really say which ufo it was. Doing the same for the dropships would be cool, too - we don't have dropship rescue missions yet, but they will come at one point, and having the model for this already then would help us a lot.

thanks again for all your work.
Title: Re: New models
Post by: Viento on January 16, 2010, 12:21:08 pm
I like the alien base model. I was thinking about how to do it because these bases should be normally well-hidden, but one can't model a well-hidden building and place it on the geoscape. So I think the approach (designing something that looks "alien" and "futuristic") works quite well! :)

After you'll finish all remain models (;)), maybe you could look at current models and try to create better versions for them?

I don't know what Ufo: ai team thinks about it, but i think that it's always good to replace art with better looking version (like in battle of wesnoth).

just found some other todos:

/** @todo Should be a special story related mission model */
story related missions should somehow be marked as important missions.

/** @todo each category should have a its own model */
categories are:
INTERESTCATEGORY_RECON
INTERESTCATEGORY_XVI
INTERESTCATEGORY_HARVEST
INTERESTCATEGORY_TERROR_ATTACK
INTERESTCATEGORY_BUILDING

those are nothing 2.3 critical - but would be nice to have models.

i will also add them to the wiki todo list.

Just one question regarding the alien base (although I like it very much):
The base is somewhat large, so isn't it a little much noticeable? I think the aliens would want to do some camouflage, too - probably in another fashion like we do (UFO yard), but anyway not with glowing marks to be seen easily from a distance...?

the spire in the middle looks a bit like its from the alien base.
the antennas are good, but maybe make the tower.. whats the word? square? (like one of the world trade center was. or like an airport-tower) and the highest tower not in middle like alien base.

Sitters, I encourage you to upload some of your models such as your Japanese / sculpture models, to www.OpenGameArt.org (http://www.OpenGameArt.org) as they would be a valuable addition there.

If people like my models they can download them from my site,
there are more then 500 models there and still growing.

sitters, thanks for helping here, your models are great !!!  :D

To the developers: I think sitters is allowing the UFO: AI project to use all of his models ( http://www.md2.sitters-electronics.nl/ )  :o
I think it would be a great idea to integrate many of them into UFORadiant (prefabs). I would do it, but I do not know how  :'(
I think sitters' models would be a valuable addition to the prefabs of UFORadiant & very helpful for the mapbuilders...
If someone could give me a detailed step-by-step instruction how to update UFORadiant with the models I would be glad to do it...

we are already using a lot of them - but here is a small tutorial on what must be done for adding new prefabs: http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/Mapping/Prefabs

Thanks for the tutorial. I've already read this.
But how do I get a *.map file, when I have a *.md2 or *.obj file, with the texture in a *.bmp file with the same name !?

you have to create a map with the md2 file - see the mapping section in the wiki - look for misc_model and actorclips, weaponclips and nodraw.

Okay, I think I've got it.  8)
First I have to check out that the *.obj file has its texture in *.jpg, *.tga or *.png.
Then I have to copy the files into the ufoaisrc folder under base/models.
Then I have to open UFORadiant.
There I have to go to entities & doubleclick misc_model & wait.
Now I can choose my new model, which should be displayed with the correct texture.
After clicking ok, I have the new model in UFORadiant.
Now I can save the new model as *.map & can copy this *.map file into UFORadiant-1.5/prefabs.
After Relaunching UFORadiant I have a new prefab  :o

Some problems still remain:

1. How can I check if the prefab has the correct texture in UFORadiant, the preview window only shows the wireframe ?

2. Some objects seem to get holes here & there when applying the texture in misc_model !?
If I have a model as *.md2 & *.obj with a texture in *.jpg or *.tga, in misc_model only the *.obj will get textured, but sometimes with errors (holes), but the *.md2 will be displayed correctly, but without the texture ?! How can I correct this or what is my error ?

3. Which is the quickest way to generate the 128x100 preview pictures of the prefabs ?

Thanks for your patience with me !

you can use the md2.pl script from trunk/src/tools to change the skin name - the guideline here is to change the skin to ".texturename" (starting with a dot - not extension. after that md2 files will have skins, too

i've done screenshots and cut the stuff with gimp to the final size. there is automatic way to do this yet.

preview window only shows them in wireframe?

UFORadiant shows only the wireframes with some red color where the textures should be when I use any of the prefabs ?!  :'(
But when I load a *.map all the textures are displayed...
When starting UFORadiant it complains about libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll missing, but then it starts & seems to work okay. Maybe the 2 problems are somehow connected ?!

Okay, I see that there is no time for stupid questions to get answered here, I understand that  ;)
The red color in UFORadiant shows the selected brush of course  :P - I am still a newbie here  :-[

Still do not know why UFORadiant complains about libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll missing - Can anyone help here ???

Other question: Wouldn't it be nice for the leveldesigners & mappers to expand the prefabs database in UFORadiant & to build a new UFORadiant-package !? Sitters models are awesome & there should be more of them integrated in the mapping tool !!!  ;D

I am not suggesting more work for the developers here, but would be pleased to integrate sitters models into UFORadiant if the developers agree that this would be helpful for the project ?! What do the developers & mappers think about that ?

Please, be on-topic, your questions not for this topic.

You don`t need to use prefabs only, you can add models manually via RMB in sideviews.

I will ask my question about UFORadiant somewhere else, sorry 'bout that !

You don`t need to use prefabs only, you can add models manually via RMB in sideviews.

Thanks for the information, I thought this was possible only through misc_model. Seems you are a real mapping-expert, Kildor 8)

Yes, this (adding models to maps) is possible only via misc_model. But you are able to add misc_model manually, without prefabs. Just don`t forget about clipping brushes (nodraw, actor|weapon- clips), model flags and so on.

sometimes I must exercise my modelling skills.

I make two  characters a man and woman,  maybe you can use it.

I love your models & just wanted to say a big thanx from my side for all the time you have invested in this project already.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!

I have looked @ all the models you offer to download on your homepage & have to tell you a thing that you probably already know of:

You really got some skills, man ! ;D

civs would be very cool - the more the better - if you could make some with ticker stomach to add a little bit of variation that would be even cooler - please don't forget to split of the head btw.
