Title: [WANTED] misc/breakelectric misc/breakwood
Post by: Mattn on May 30, 2009, 02:33:19 pm
hi - and again we need two new sound files. this time for breakable stuff.

there are already two sounds for breaking glass and breaking metal - it would be nice to have three for each of:

for the electric break sound it should be something like a spark sound maybe.

the files should have the names break[type][1-3].ogg - they should be normalized against the weapon shoot sounds and the footstep sounds. the game would chose a random sound file for the given type (out of the 3 different sound files i would like to have) to play it when a func_breakable is destroyed

Some neat freely-licensed destruction sounds (at least some wood sounds I hear there): http://opengameart.org/search/art?keys=destruction , mostly taken from http://www.johannespinter.com/inu/ljudbank.htm, which itself is public domain.

for electric you could possibly record the sounds from a Firework Sparkler
something simlar to this. but possibly using a real life one rather something edited.
sparkler (http://www.audiosparx.com/sa/archive/Amusement/Fireworks-misc/A-Sparkler-Sound/244162)

r29261 is the start to add support for more than one breaksound

Hello Gren !
Welcome back  :D
Why don't you use the link I gave you for the uploads ?
I have to wait for the downloadlink to appear every time  >:(

These files were so small, they would even fit as attachment in here  ;)

Review:
I like them, although I think the electric-ones should be maybe a little bit shorter & if you could remove the hall-effect from the wood-samples those would be perfect IMO. Really sounds like cracking wood  ;).
Maybe just leave the electric ones like they are & make some additional short ones for comparison in-game. But this is all just opinion here...
Thanx for helping out on the UFO:AI Soundfront !!! DO MORE  ;) !!!

Hi MCR - I've set up the host you gave me the link for - I didn't realise that you had to wait for the download.. I'll use yours next time ;)

I can remove the slight room-echo from the wood samples, but although I have created and saved the patch, I will have to output the files again without the effect, so they may not be in exactly the same sound format as the first lot.

I'll re-do them and see what they come out like.

Same with the electrical ones - but shorter?

I just think it would be nice to have some versions for a later test in-game, as I do not know exactly where these samples will be used...
But I think that 3 seconds is too long for an electric-sound after weapon-impact for example...
But again, I do not know where exactly those sounds needed will be used in-game, so  ::)...

No Worries MCR ;)

I've re-made them and included .txt file to also cover the first 6.

Try these..

Btw - thanks for the welcome back - but I didn't go anywhere....  :D ;D ::)

Nice!  ;D - Looking at some settings to produce metal..  ;) I guess you have enough Glass effects.

we only have one glass effect - and one metal effect. some more would be useful ;)

OK Mattn - I thought the glass breaking sounds would be easiest to produce and I figured you would have had loads of submissions by now.. but I've already set up quite a few - I'll re-visit and create the .oggs.

In the meantime I've attached the Metal Breaking effects - although they don't really sound like breaking - more clattering and banging, but it's the nearest I could get without spending a deal of time - see what you think ;)

Hey Gren, maybe it would be a good idea if you just decompress the file yourufoinstallationdirectory/base/0snd.pk3.  ::)

You can use 7zip for that:

http://www.7-zip.org/

After doing that you can check all the sound available for UFO:AI @ the moment & maybe you can get a impression of what is missing or only available in bad quality yourself...  ;)

Sure - I'll have look/listen. May tell me what's there, but not what's required tho.  ??? - In the meantime, some quite short Fire & Water Stereo samples... :)

Required is everything that you can make better there & also variations of the stuff that is already there ;)

Thanx for the new samples. Had no time to listen to them (yet), but knowing the quality you deliver already, they are ok for sure...

i will apply them to trunk, too

it would be nice if you could use lowercase filenames ;)

I notice that there are a lot of .wav format files. I can re-sample these and export/convert them to .ogg if it's of any help. Doing a re-sample will also give the opportunity to improve quality where needed. ;)

I'm also still working on the Return Journey track (and others) - not forgotten!  :D

but is'nt it easyer to just right click the file and goto rename?

it would'nt alter the contents of the file...

so the uppercase ones he sent you. are easyily changed.

Sure Encha - quite right, but I think Mattn means any future files that I send ;)
Title: Re: [WANTED] misc/breakelectric misc/breakwood
Post by: MCR on April 10, 2010, 03:00:06 pm
@Encha: I think he knows that.  ;)

@Gren: Sure, although it does not make a big difference in filesize, because the sound-effects are rather short anyway, but if you would combine the task of recoding them with the task of improving the quality of the samples that would be GREAT !
I say: Go Ahead Doing That !
I would suggest to use max 128 VBR oggs for the soundsamples. Please do use VBR, to have the stuff perfect, with no need to recode this ever again & look also @ the volume level, maybe some of the samples could use higher or lower volume, although we can adjust this via the game-engine also...

Great to hear, that you have not forgotten 'Return Journey', but I did never think that. An artist needs his time, so take the time needed to make stuff good.  ;)
