Title: Trouble starting 2.2

I can't get 2.2 to start up.  It brings up the initial console, the screen flashed black for a second then return to the start up console with the following message:

for whatever reason your system is using the windows gdi driver (not hw accelerated) - try to install another driver, maybe that helps

xp or vista? (looks like xp)

Same problem with 2.2 here. Testet we new installed WinXP (32) and Vista (64)

CPU: Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 (newest BIOS, newest Driver)
GPU: X1800XT 256MB (Cat 7.12)
Sound: Creativ Audigy2 (newest Driver)

2.1.1 runs with Cat 7.9, so i will test this driver.

Yep, this is on XP.

I tried the 7.9 drivers as Dana suggested and they appear to work. The game starts at least.
Is there anything for y'all at UFO:AI to fix or is this entirely ATI/ADM's problem?
Title: Re: Trouble starting 2.2
Post by: BTAxis on January 14, 2008, 12:41:40 am
I've had the same issues with the latest drivers. I'm on Catalyst 7.9 also. I can only hope the situation will fix itself when ATi releases more drivers.

On a side note, with anything after Catalyst 7.4 or so, I can't get any windowed OpenGL application to render anything as long as it is on my main monitor. It renders properly when I start it in fullscreen (no alt-tabbing!) or drag it to my secondary monitor. If I switch the primary/secondary roles for my monitors, OpenGL renders properly on both monitors. I have no idea what causes this.

Has anyone ran the game successfully under Vista w/ATI graphics card?

What a pity :\ However creed that in the majority of the cases works.
Put depth of colors at 16 bit; once in game, from Options, put in full screen, and enjoy ^^

Sorry for my english... I have not never had the occasion, the possibility, to learn it o_O but I hope of to have been useful...

I've been having the same issue with these latest builds.  Rolling back to 7.9 with color set to 16bit fixed it.  However, if I click to set it to full screen, the game CTD's without remark or the slightest hesitation

*edit* Ok, altering the config file to +set vid_fullscreen 1 worked like a charm.

I have the same problem with UFO AI version 2.2 and ATI Catalyst 8.1. Using ATI Radeon X1650 Pro with Windows XP SP2.

Please fix this bug, I don't want to downgrade the ATI Catalyst because I need the current driver for another game.

It's a bug in the driver, not in the game.

Found a FIX :D

Short tutorial:

1. U need catalyst drivers installiation package <=7.9
2. Start it, and dont press any buttons and dont' install it (u just need some file that will be unpacked ;) )
3. Go to c:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-8_xp32_dd_50960\Driver\XP_INF\B_51322\ (example for 7.8 )
4. Copy atioglxx.dl_ to another directory
5. Use in cmd.exe this command:

expand atioglxx.dl_ atioglxx.dll

6. Copy atioglxx.dll to UFO directory
7. Enjoy ;)

Tested by me on 7.12 and 8.1 :)

Thanks for the great fix. I have ATI Catalyst 8.1 installed and copied the atioglxx.dll from Catalyst 7.9 in the UFO AI folder. It works really good, both bugs I noticed are gone!

Doesn't work for me too...using Mobility Radeon x700...

Originally use driver one with 7-4-mobile_xp_dd_ccc_enu_44983...the console opens, then the game screen flashes and everything closed...

I can't use official ATI driver because it doesn't support (for some reason...), so I turn to Omega driver...the game did open, but then error message is produced...so can't play at all...

And Fixer's fix didn't help...

I started the game but it run windowed. Hmm, I tryed to run Safe Mode - ok but no sound.
I looked at parameters of a command line of Safe Mode Icon: +set vid_fullscreen 1 +set r_mode 6 +set snd_init 0
2. I have changed cmd line parametres to

I also have a Radeon X700 card.  Haven't been able to startup the game at all.

Have tried every trick/tip in this thread.  And have tried just about every driver out there.  I either get the 'no hardware detection' message, or the process simply dies after the startup process.

I was looking sooooo forward to this game, as xcom is one of my childhood memories.

Anyone manage to find a 100% solution for this yet?

If you are willing to invest a little time, you may be able to check out the 2.2 source and add to it the new renderer only (I don't know if this is possible - mattn?). Then you can compile it yourself, and you'll be able to play 2.2 with a decent frame rate.

possible is almost everything - but this is neither an easy task nor a "let's-do-it-quick" task - and it's not reasonable imo, too - fixing bugs in 2.3 and help to speed up the 2.3 release, that would be reasonable ;)

Actually that is what step I'm doing when I get the error. Is there a specific place I should put the file before I expand it?

When your at the command prompt you need to change directories to the folder you moved the file to before you can expand it.

For instance, copy the file to a new folder on your desktop,

Start the command prompt and CD to the desktop and then the new folder, your prompt should read something like this "C:\Users\Lucien\Desktop\New Folder" (This is for 64bit Vista) and then expand it.

This should create the new file in the same folder.

Hope this helps

Try compiling it yourself. All you need to know is on the wiki. They have made it as easy as humanly possible.

maybe i should do a wiki article. barebones of compiling: covering that first subversion checkout, compiling with code:blocks (windows) and map compiling.

I am rubbish at C, (as any of the devs will tell you) and yet I manage.

Take that extra step into open-source.

The 7.8 dll does not work.  It is not a bug in the driver.  It is a bug in this program code.  ONLY this program has this problem.

I can't even mess with the config file because there is no user data directory.  I'm guessing that is generated after it looks for hardware accel.

Any chances of a fix one of these days? I have the problem running the most recent Omega drivers. It's obviously not a bug in the drivers because other games work just fine. The change to 16 bit doesn't do anything.
Title: Re: Trouble starting 2.2
Post by: BTAxis on September 03, 2008, 10:51:05 am
Just because other games work fine doesn't mean there's not a bug in the drivers. For one thing, this game use OpenGL, while most games use DirectX.

Mind you, it's not because your drivers are Omega. Compatibility should be the same as the drivers they're based on. If there's a problem with the drivers, it's ATi's fault.

Post by: Brons on September 03, 2008, 12:39:41 pm
That's true. Although I haven't had any problems with other openGL applications, so they were able to fix this driver bug. But any intention to fix this in any way? I can't boot the game at all, and changing the video card isn't an option because I'm on a notebook.

256 MB seems to be the problem. Make sure you have enough swap space.
UFO 2.3 needs some 500 MB on top of Window$.

I'm also having problems with "no hardware acceleration detected". Cannot spot any differences between mine and post #67 error log.

Using:-
Windows XP Pro on Intel P3 800 MHz 256 MB RAM.
Graphics: NVIDIA RIVA TNT 2 model 64/model 64 pro with driver version 4.6.7.3 (both MS and nvidia report drivers up to date)

I remember somebody was using the game with TNT2 so it should work. Make sure you have openGL. I think it could be disabled with old drivers.

Thanks for the reply but I have no idea what this means. How do I make sure I have openGL? How do I check that it is enabled/disabled? As I understand, other website recommends not downloading openGL as it's part of the graphics driver, so I've done nothing yet. What I really need is some step by step instructions please. Thanks.

Hi gammerz,

Your computer is relatively under-spec for a windows XP Pro. I supposed u have Service Pack (SP) 3 running and installed and patched. If so, its going to be worse.

First thing to get it to load up, u need some at least 512MB of ram (I highly recommend 1GB to 2GB). If u do not have the luxury of $$, u need to tweak your windows to get it to max out in performance.

1) First thing is to disable all unnecessary processes. (Startups and Resident memory programs [TSRs].
If this sounds too technical already, it means uninstall your unwanted programs, and at the bottom right hand side where your clock usually is, right cilk on all unnecessary applications loaded and Quit/Exit them.

2) Delete all unnecessary files and CLEAR your TRASHBIN / Recycle Bin.

3) Tweak your Windows Swap File (Thats the file most ppl ask u to tweak anyway). An online simple guide is here: Link for Editing Swap File on Win XP (http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/2177271)

A little more on this. Go to the last point of that tutorial link above. At the Custom Size part, since u r running 256MB ram only, u should :

a) Change the C drive to another drive (A partition that IS NOT the same as the harddisk of the OS, meaning: a different harddisk's partition like D or E).

b) The size should be maybe 2MB for C (A must) and put at least 512MB (it usually is "Your Ram Size" x 1.5). I recommend if you have alot of harddisk space to spare, put in : Initial Size - 2048MB, Max 4095MB.

c) Do a system restart, boot into safe mode: (Code from : PCHELL (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml))

Code: [Select]
    * If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
    * Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    * Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    * Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
    * Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    * When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

d) Do a defrag from there.

e) Restart your computer.

==========

After you have done the above, your system is partially tweaked. You may wish to tweak if further, but then again i do not know your technical knowledge level of WinXP. So bump this thread again when u r done and do indicate how much more u wish to tweak your system.....

(Btw, this still does not means u can run the UFOAI very quickly - if it does load, cos your hardware specs really is short of RAM.....)

First check the 'video initialization' part of the ufoconsole.log. if there is something like
Code: [Select]
GL_VENDOR: Microsoft Corporation
GL_RENDERER: GDI Generic
GL_VERSION: 1.1.0

That's bad. Microsoft opengl.dll doesn't provide 3d acceleration. You can check the configuration of your nvidia driver (Right click on desktop, settings, advanced....) if there is an openGL option.

My "video initialisation" section DOES contain the 3 "bad" lines you mention and there is NO "open GL" option on my nvidia driver. So looks like I can't run it? Thanks to Geever & Odi for your help.

You should find an openGL driver for your videocard. Then It will work (hopefuilly).

The name's "geever" (Small Letters in Forum's Nick) and "odie" (with an e.... haha.)

Actually, other than the graphics card, i still want to suspect one more thing..... did u tweaked your PC to turn off hardware accelerations??

I assume u r on WIN XP (Pro / Home, does not matter, even win 2000 and 98 looks same)
Make sure you "Turn ON your Hardware Acceleration."

Here's a tutorial on how to turn off the hardware acceleration (http://www.deskshare.com/Resources/articles/dmc_turnoffhardwareacceleration.aspx).
Instead of pulling the bar to off, turn it to max and see if it works.

If however, acceleration is already maxed, i am sorry. U have to change your graphics card..... (intel sux - Intelligent my foot.... lol.)

@odie, it's about opengl as I wrote before: The Microsoft opengl.dll doesn't support hardware acceleration, he should use video card manufacturer's opengl driver.

Oh! *Enlightened suddenly*.

He's using MS OpenGL! Aiyoz, why not just Reinstall the Nvidia / His original Graphics Card's drivers and OpenGL to solve the whole issue?

*If you have a choice not to use Microsoft's products, always choose it*.

Thanks. Yupz.

I had this problem.

I have an eeepc 1101HA. This has Intel Atom processor (dual 1.33Ghz, 2Gb RAM) which has the GMA500 chipset. Intel got some guys called Tungsten to do the graphics stuff, this is why though Intel stuff is all open to Linux and generally works, the GMA500 is a mess.

The solution is updated drivers from Intel. This is described with download links here (http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=76282).

Now if only I could make Oolite visible, and get the recent mods on Mount & Blade to stop giving me RGL errors. Tungsten suxxorz.

I have the same trouble with my Eee PC 900HA

I don't think that it's a driver trouble, as its OpenGL capable, ex. i can run Eve online, Dungeons & Dragons online too.

The intel driver allows for some tweaking not as much as the nvidia or ati cards

The card haves not Transform & Lightning on hardware and but the driver provides software T&L capabilities

The native resolution for the screen is on 1024x600 and therefore the game shows a "no hardware accelerator found" error, but I can change the res to 1024x768 and the game runs then switch back to 1024x600, with game ress set to 800x600 runs fine.

Devs could correct this message to give more info on the specific trouble

The driver haves a "compressed mode" to use 1024x768 apps in screen ress of 1024x600 but it slows down performance a lot as each frame has to be scaled to fit

Support for 1024x600 would be nice

In 2.3, we support for 1024x600. In 2.2.x hmm. I've seen 1024x640 only, sorry.

What worked for me (AMD Radeon 3650 on Catalyst 10-2):

Change HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers\ati2dvag\Dll from "atioglx2.dll" to ''atioglxx.dll'

i had same problem on my little netbook. it's opengl settings specific to your video card. i am running on a acer d255e netbook, graphics card is a "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3150"

just mess with opengl settings (on intel graphics utility it's under 3d settings) just drop everything off, or low, then tinker till it stops working. then you know what it is on YOUR machine. good luck guys

it is a graphics driver issue, seen on low end gfx cards. means your opengl settings too high for your gfx card to handle... short of writing a registry file for EACH INDIVIDUAL graphics card model. nothing dev's can do for this one...
