Title: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: Zukn on January 13, 2008, 12:14:42 am
Aside from UFO:AI what do you play alot of?
Rome:Total War is a bit of favourite of mine. I used to be an Everquest junkie, I play The Sims 2 now and again.
Neverwinter Nights, Baldurs gate 1+2 were great and I occaisonaly replay them. Freelancer was alot of fun and I still have it installed

Halo, FEAR, Tactics Ogre, Front Mission (forgot which part, I never finished it), Warrock, Warcraft III, Tribes 1 & 3, and there was that game in Cartoon Network I used to play. I don't think it was for kids as it was much, much harder than UFO: AI. It featured squad-, turn-, and LOS-based tactical combat. I think it was called IGPX. It ran for less than a year before it vanished from their site.

And oh, WARHAMMER 40,000: DAWN OF WAR FTW!

Here, having fast reflexes is not so much of advantage as squads live longer than those units in WC3. IMO, fast reflexes should not be a major factor in strategy games. (that's why I like UFO:AI)

Galactic Civilizations 2 is VERY good too. I played it for a time in my friend's cafe but it just takes too much time.

For my money, Star Control II remains one of the best games ever.  Not just one of the best computer games ever -- one of the best games ever.  (You can nab it for free now as "The Ur-Quan Masters" from sourceforge.)  It's never not been on my hard drive since I bought it.

Thanks to DOSBox (also available on sourceforge), I play a lot of the original X-COM.

Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space still holds appeal for me because I'm a space nut.  (This is also available as Race Into Space on sourceforge for free.)  I freely admit that the learning curve on that game is unfairly steep, though.

And I have to agree that Galactic Civilizations II is nothing short of amazing.  They're about to release another expansion pack, "Twilight of the Arnor" -- and their expansion packs are enormous, almost full game releases in their own right.  It's highly tweakable to your own personal gaming preferences, and it's easy to construct a game that will take years to play.  At the rate 4X TBS space games come out, if you like them, you should grab this one; it's easily going to be the last until 2037.

Dawn of War is a great game. I dislike RTS games, but that game, along with Starcraft, is the exception.

I don't think GalCiv 2 is that good, myself - it takes far too long, and navigating the interface, especially when designing your own ship types, is clunky when you don't have a mouse wheel, like me. I also don't like how the only way to go seems to be to work your way into debt buying colonizers early on, because if you don't all the good planets will be gone in no time.
A much better game is Sword of the Stars, which also features much more exciting combat.

A game I enjoyed a lot back in the day is Alpha Centauri. I liked it a lot better than Civilization. Unfortunately, Alpha Centauri doesn't work on Windows XP, despite an update that's supposed to make it work. There's a mod for Civilization 4, but I don't know how well I like that one so far.

I can't believe I forgot to mention the Civ franchise, I loved designing different troops and ships in ALpha Centauri but going through and deleting obsolete designs was a pain.

Oh, I just remembered. On the city building front, I really like Zeus Master of Olympus. Caesar 3 and Pharaoh are alright too, but not quite as much fun in my experience.

Since my machine is a bit of age I enjoy the older games.  ;)
Civ4 with friends, HL2 mods as long as framerates don't prevent me from, Starcraft, some adventures if they show up, C&C first decade and I'm always out for cool free games/remakes like this one (hope the Syndicate clone in 3d gets beta soon).

Oh and I miss Dungeon Keeper a lot.  ;D

...I loved designing different troops and ships in ALpha Centauri but going through and deleting obsolete designs was a pain.

In My mind Alpha Centari is the supreme example of it's genera, especially with the expansion pack which helped a few weak spots.

But i agree, the interface was annoying, especially by today's standards.  I'd love to see a remake, especially if the core game was kept intact.

Starsiege: Tribes Annihilation 'till it hurts.  I also had a long-running affair with Starsiege, and trysts with other games from the series (Cyberstorm, in particular).  Some C&C (everything except 3, though I began losing interest with RA2).  Sometimes some other FPS, but even Halo feels slow after playing Tribes.

In general, I prefer games with some semblance of strategy and a level of cause-and-effect physics, at minimum.  I preferred Apocalypse to the original X-COM in part for that reason (honestly, can't beat using teleporters to sew an enemy base with unarmed vortex mines, then set it all off with incendiaries for one hell of a fireworks show.

Alpha Centauri was great.

TF2 is taking up most of my gaming time these days.

WoW?  Haven't played it. I was an EQ player WoW undoubtedly made MMO more popular, whether it sold the souls of gamers is open to debate.

I've been gaming since the 80's...some of my favorites in no particular order

Star control 2, XCOM UFO Defence, X3 Reunion, BG 1 & 2, StarWars KOTOR, Crysis, Oblivion ( despite it's flaws ), Silent Hunter 3 & 4, Chronicles of Riddick, Fear, Call of Duty series, Medal of Honor Series, No One Lives Forever 2, Alien versus Predator, Gothic 3 ( but only with the latest community patch, too buggy otherwise ), and many others, but probably my all time favorite...System Shock 2. I wish a complete remake of this game, was to be done with todays tech...now that would be awesome indeed !!

Didn't you play Bioshock then? It's the spiritual successor to SS2. It's not as good, though...
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: Falion on June 05, 2008, 04:01:07 pm
No BT,  I haven't played Bioshock as of yet. I read all the reviews saying it wasn't quite all the hype that surrounded it. And while it sounded good...I usually won't pay the initial price for a game unless it's really outstanding in all aspects. Once I read that it wasn't quite the game SS2 was, I said...why pay $50.00 for a lesser experience. I'll pick it up at some point when it finally drops down to around the $19.99 or less price :)

Freespace 1&2  ----- 8 years and I'm still playing this. The Source Code Project sure does help tough. Revamped engine that can match anything today.

Jagged Alliance 2  -------- oldie but goldie...especially with the 1.13 mod

Sword of the Stars (+ Born of Blood expansion)  --- now this is a kick ass game. KICK. ASS.

Outcast - very old, but great gameplay and story

UFO series, X-Com series   - need I say more?

Baldurs Gate 1&2, NWN2, Mass Effect  ---- all hail Bioware!
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: BTAxis on June 13, 2008, 12:57:29 pm
I beat Mass Effect the other day, the PC version. The game is rather boring, but the story and character development are pretty good. It also really made me want to play Star Control 2 again.

BT, I just beat Star Control 2 again after not playing for many years. For anyone who would like to play this golden oldie, here is a link to the project ( if your not already aware of it ) that will play on modern PC's. The game is identical ( with a few enhancements ) to the original 3DO / PC game of the early 90's.

Enjoy !!

Yes, that's what I'm playing. It really is a very flawed game, with all sorts of things that could have been better, but it's still incredibly fun. I never did beat it because it always pissed me off in the past, but maybe this time, eh?
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: Falion on June 13, 2008, 03:21:36 pm
Yeah the game does have it's flaws...but it's just fun. I imagine a game with this plot ( but more fleshed out ), with a modern 3D space engine...maybe similar to X3 Reunion. Improve the storyline somewhat, remove some, but not all of the "campy" stuff ( a bit more ominous / serious ), improve the combat and ships...be a very COOL game. If you should need any help in beating the game...let me know and I'll PM you some tips and a few easter eggs I found after about the 3rd time though it :)
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: BTAxis on June 13, 2008, 03:38:22 pm
I was thinking along the same lines, except nothing as elaborate as X3. More something like a more modern version of Escape Velocity, combined with the exploration and resource gathering element of SC2. Perhaps also with a slight 4X touch, allowing the player to expand his own territory and conquer others. And of course with a random starmap generator for replay value.

Yeah, chalk that one up as one of the games that don't exist, but should. There's a bunch of those.

Post by: Darkpriest667 on June 15, 2008, 05:04:02 pm
ok .. well ill give you guys a post from another thread i had

1. Master of Orion 2
Ever played a game that could make you stay up for an entire week without the use of narcotics. This is it folks. This game took the best of civilization 1, Simcity, and the original Master of Orion and stuck it all together. Producing what is hailed by serious 4x strategy players as the best strategy game of all time. This is a must have for any experienced gamer.

2. Doom
Killing the undead with a chainsaw... I think thats self explanatory/

3. The Elder scrolls 3 : Morrowind
Tired of RPG's that are linear and give you no real choice.. No way to really roleplay *hence the term RPG* the story... This is the game for you... 1500 hours after beating the main story line you can still find yourself searching the mountains or caves or even the ocean for new and exciting things to do. This is a must have for those that claim to love RPG's

4. Ultima Online
The first 3d mmorpg. Sure it had flaws.. But it was an MMORPG and has lead to many successful ripoffs.

5. Super Mario Brothers
One of the best console games of all time. from 4 years old to 75 Every person can get some sort of gratification out of Super Mario brothers. adding the yoshis and a few extra elements along with the beautiful colors made this a must have.

6. Rainbow six: Rogue Spear
FPS is a beat to death genre.. But in 1997 Rogue spear put it to the next level... With such detail as the type of ammo to the awesome mod collection... This game was intense and fast paced even for the 56k dialup era.. Hours of amusement.. And the singleplayer Campaign was tough.

7. Myst
A real adventure game for the inquisitive at heart. Myst takes you through time and space as it shows you how in depth an adventure/puzzle game came be. Resident Evil was almost a direct ripoff of this idea. Myst was as beautiful to look at as it was slow to load But It was worth it.

8. X-wing Versus Tie Fighter
This game put the best of CFS and star wars together.... Way ahead of its time... and probably a little too much for the computers of the day.. A remake of this is definitely overdue.. This game was everything the kids from the late 70s and early 80s wanted.. to fly a tie fighter or an x wing (and some of the other fighter/bombers too!!)

9. Grand Theft Auto 3 Vice City
Car Jacking, picking up prostitutes, beating up random people, and just causing citywide mayhem... I think this really doesnt need much more of an explanation.. GTA3 has saved the police departments world wide trillions in pent up aggression. Thankyou rockstar games Thankyou.

10. Total Annihilation
I know a lot of you were expecting to see Command and conquer or Warcraft 2 here... unfortunately total annihilation was so much better once you had it no C and C or WC game would fill the void... naval, ground, air, long range artillery. My first map game lasted 27 hours. The modding was excellent.. This game is still so popular there is an open liscence project full release. And its got even better graphics than the first one.

Games of note that didnt make the list
Xcom UFO defense
Simcity 2000
Civilization 4
Star Fox
Grand Turismo
NBA Jams
Madden Football
Asteroids
Galaga
Diablo
Ogame
Goldeneye
Zelda The Ocarina of Time

I think compatibility is pretty decent. You may need a lot of CPU power to play it at a good speed, but MOO is pretty static, so maybe it doesn't matter too much.

fallion i have some sort of exe file i made like 5 years ago for windows xp.. i cant even remember exactly how i got it to work..

here are some tips..

using ultra iso or magic iso create a mounted drive

use the mounted drive to trick the game into believing its the disc... or somethign to that effect...

I do still play it fairly regularly and well... I got both my roomates addicted to it
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?

I never actually got into MOO2. I completed a game once, but I never felt the need to play another. I played the crap out of Ascendancy, though, even though that game has its own set of flaws.

Nowadays when I want a space 4X I look to Sword of the Stars. I'm trying to like Space Empires V too, but it's just too full of micro.
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: Falion on June 16, 2008, 03:18:00 am
I just took a look at some game called Galactic Civilizations 2...it looks pretty good, especially with the 2 expansions. Basically, I'm tired of all my old games and need some type of a fix, while awaiting 2.3 to come out...

Anyone have anything positive to say about GC2? And BT...how good is that Sword of the Stars you mentioned? Maybe I'll get both of them...usually can get stuff fairly inexpensive off Amazon if they have been out for a bit. I'm sure I'll get at least one of them...and just pass on trying to get the old MOO2 to work.
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: BTAxis on June 16, 2008, 01:11:15 pm
I don't like GC2. I know it's tooted to be one of the best 4X out there, but I've played it several times, none of which long. I don't like the way the game works. If you don't immediately go into debt buying colonizers you lose the initial race for planets, and if you do you're stuck with a shit economy for ages. I also don't really care much for the way ships move. Furthermore capturing enemy planets is a major pain in the ass. The first mission in the campaign makes you capture one enemy planet, and it took so long I got bored and deleted the game.

Designing your own ships is kind of fun, I suppose, but it's also useless since all that matters is what modules you put on it. Plus the interface didn't work well for me because it relies heavily on the mous wheel/MMB, which I don't have.

If you really want a game of this scope and depth, go for Civ 4.
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: Darkpriest667 on June 16, 2008, 06:18:38 pm
Civ 4 is pretty good all of the civ series are.. ive played all 4.. (yes including the dos version that had EGA graphics)

Space empires 5 is fun but like you said BT... too damn much micromanaging....

Master of orion 3 was a complete fubar

fallion have you tried the total war series? I find it to be pretty fun
Title: Re: What other games do you enjoy?
Post by: Falion on June 16, 2008, 06:29:07 pm
No I haven't done the War series...both Rome and the newer one look good, but I'm more into sci-fi and space type stuff. Maybe I'll give one or both of them a go anyhow. I guess there isn't any really knock your socks off sci-fi 4X games out there ATM. Sad to hear about GC2 BT...all the reviews I looked over, gave it anywhere from a 8.0 or better on a scale of 1-10...maybe they get a commission LOL.

On another note...I'm really looking forward to Fallout 3 in the fall, just hope it's done right !!!

BT...might want to check out GC2 here....

http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/reviews/1776/Galactic_Civilizations_2_Twilight_of_Arnor.html

Seems the game has had a decent overhaul...might actually be worth a try now. There is also a total conversion of X3 being worked on for GC2...which is interesting.

Yeah, Stardock has really been keeping at it. Lots of patches and improvements. They offer the kind of support that puts other companies to shame.

The game just isn't for me.

They also made a real-time thing called Sins of a Solar Empire. It's sort of interesting, but from what I've seen it doesn't have much staying power. But some of the mods that people are making for it appeal to me, so I'm keeping an eye on it.

i have sins of a solar e mpire... its ok but its basic RTS tactics build the cheapest most effective unit and rush.. thats not my style and players got pissed when i made maps with 40 stars lol... where it takes an hour just to get your fleet from star system a to star system b...

some of the mods are good but it has a unit limit and i have a problem w ith that

For those interested in playing Master of Orion 2 on modern systems, there is a patch and a windows exe that works on XP. I managed to make it work with sounds and everything on XP, without DOSbox

MOO2 (dos mode) runs with dos4gw and there is an improved dos4gw version 2 or something, which doesn't crash with dosbox. I used that with Dosbox for playing the old Warcraft 1 Orcs and Humans :)

I see people made some lists with the games they enjoyed. My list would be a page long, and would be similar to Darkpriest's, but not in the same order. Right now I'm casually playing World of Warcraft (after I dedicated the winter to the game). WoW it's a great game because of the fun factor. The devs created a deep storyline and alot of lore, yet there are some things made for fun which you know they aren't meant to be taken seriously, like easter eggs or NPC name puns. I like it because it lets your imagination free, with less concerns about what does has to do with orcs and elves and such...

I liked the squad based strategy games, and I think Jagged Alliance 2 was my favourite, then Fallout, including Tactics. JA was great because each soldier had an unique personality, perks and voice acting, so you got the feeling that you are really in a team with those guys.

I share the opinion that Galactic Civ is a big disappointment. I really tried to find a way to enjoy it, but no matter what I did, I found it boring. The only thing that I did was to make some really cool ship designs, because I was so bored with the game. After that I went back to Master of Orion 2 and deleted Gal Civ :) However, all Civilization style games suffer from to much micromanagement,a nd I don't like them so much. However, I found a rarer version of Civilization 1, called CivNet, which works on modern systems. Tbh, Civ 1 is still very good and quite fun to play, because the game is much more intense than the newer versions where you can play for hours without anything important happening.

Settlers 2 - thank you DOSbox
Planeshift
Warcraft 3 - not the best IMHO
Vampire the masquerade bloodlines
Total annihilation
recently spring- remake of TA

I also miss Warhammer 40k and i think ill soon try it via wine(another lovely invention for penguin lovers)

EDIT1
IMPORTANT- anyone has a Dungeon Keeper 1 game with dos4gw.exe or keeper.exe?
My ateptms to run it on wine failed and DK gold no longer has dos files.

MMOG's i play (in order of appearance)

UO - still a very fun game. This one introduced me to the cruel world of online gaming.

EverQuest. This game was very innovative and fun to play, and in its infancy there was not many kool-dude kids, so the atmosphere was the way it should be in a fantasy good / evil MMOG

Asherons Call. This game had lots of potential and good sides. Too bad it came after EverQuest which got all the attention, and since my friends played EQ so did mostly i.

--------------------------
World War 2 Online. This game is a gem for the WW2 buffs out there. PvP in a MMOG should not be about what sword you have, what level you are, or how many hitpoints you got. This game does it right with physics. Play tank, antitank gun, anti air gun, fly fighter, bomber, divebomber, infantry of many flavours, trucks, hauler for the heavy guns, etc. This game had many problems when it was launched but now its the best pvp MMOG out there i think. And its all on the same server, waging war over a map halfscale of northern France-Belgium-Netherlands-western Germany

Here is a film of some gameplay:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOoS0AVQIAo

--------------
Planetside. Good game, the first 2-3 months, but after fighting over the same complexes over and over and over again in meaningless battles i went back to the truly epic battles of WW2Online mentioned above.

Dark age of Camelot. This game had a good atmosphere for a fantasy RPG MMOG, i liked it alot, now all my friends have quit, and i play it less and less, but i invested so much and have had so many good moments that i find it hard to quit.

EverQuest 2. Tried, too much of the same old same. Quit

Pirates of the Burning Sea. Still active. Many players quit for AoC which i never tried. This game is different from others because its about ruling the seas. Sailing ships, fighting for control in the Caribien sea fighting as british, french, spanish, or pirate in many sailiingships from the smallest rowingboats to the biggest Ship-of-the-line.

Single player games.
UFO:AI of course.
I also used to play UFO: Aftermath and the sequel, but i shelfed those when i came across this game.

Silent Hunter III with the Gray Wolves upgrade. This game is the best submarine simulator i have seen, and i have played alot of them since Silent Service in the late 80's.

Civilization II-IV All great games that have taken alot of my time.

Master of Orion 2, and 3- two very different games. Both great, but the #3 had some serious issues.

DaggerFall. I missed out on Arena which was the first game from Bethesta in this series.
Morrowind. I didnt play this as much as Daggerfall, much because it was a smaller world and i was playing several MMOG's instead.
Oblivion. Great RPG game, superb touch and feeling to it, but my computer is struggling.

Shogun Total War. The first game from the Creative Assembly. This game was a hit for us that where gamers at the time. Also the upgrade Mongol Invasion.
Medieval Total War. Sequel to Shogun, many things that made the game better, a classic among gamers. Also with the upgrade Viking Invasion.
Rome Total War. This was a bit of a turnoff since the game had turn into mainstream gaming with a "fastfood" touch to it. The "Total Realism" mod made it a much better game IMHO. Also with the upgrade Barbarian Invasion.

Medieval II. Great game but sadly with some of the fast-food elements to attract the AD/HD gamers. Corrected in many great mods out there. Later came the upgrade Kingdoms which added many new functions.

I also play too many games to be added to the list. More may came later.

You probably need to buy a new computer to play it, though.

I enjoyed strategy games like Age of Empires.. I loved the second version and third and new version failed me a bit.. I used to sit for more than 4 hours playing the game..

Nowdays I only play two games for real:
- UFOAI :)
- Civ IV: FFH2 - this is a mod for Civ IV, I have not played a single game of civ ever since I saw the mod, there are thousands of ppl who bought the expansion BtS only to play that mod, believe me, it is that powerful
[ http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=308020 ]

- not any more but year ago played DoW online a lot

I also used to play a lot:
- MoO2 - Galactic Civ 2 is awful if you ever got into MoO2 for real
- M.A.X.
- Settlers I&II
- Heroes of Might and Magic 1 to 3 + WoG [Wake of Gods, unoficial modpack]
- Homeworld
- Shogun: Total War

Now you know why I am so found of modding.

I gave FFH2 a shot, but I never got far. Then again, I never got far with Civ 4 in the first place. I'm just not good at it.

i did buy a new computer to play it Axis :-p LOL

i guess ill throw my 2 cents in

Games i still regularly play

IL-2 1946 probably the best flight sim ever developed for ww2

Moo2  - If anyone here hasnt played moo2... well they should be slapped and given a computer to play it on

Civ 4 - beyond the sword - all the civ series is really good .. this one has again pushed the 4x genre to the top

Master of Magic - this game rocked.. period...

Xcom enemy unknown - im a sucker for this game i still love playing it

Medieval 2 Kingdoms with retrofit mod - friends and i are playing this as a hotseat play by email game.. i am playing turkey 1 is playing england and the other milan... its turning out to be quite fun..

Empire Total War - I've been playing this since it was released a month ago.. and well its got a lot of bugs and such... and needs to be ironed out before it can become a true classic

ufo AI - i am still waiting for the latest build to come out for windows so i can play it again.

BTW ive played all 4 games in the elder scroll series... and overall gameplay... Elder scrolls 3 MORROWIND is the best one... i logged over 1500 hours on my level 56 ranger character... including my favorite feature your own designed spells.. i had one called Superjump... jump 200 points for 1 second on self... i could jump across the island in 2 hops.. oblivion was ok but too small in my opinion... arena was good ... daggerfall was pretty decent also but morrowind was the best.
