Title: Particle and sound needed: Electrolaser
Post by: Winter on July 19, 2007, 12:20:52 pm
One of the new weapons on our TODO list is the Electrolaser, which is basically a ranged version of the stun rod, operating as per the standard electrolaser principle:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrolaser

The model for this weapon has been completed, and can be found in SVN base/models/weapons/electrolaser

What we need now is a particle and sound for the firing effect. Once we have that we can implement it right away. hoehrer will post a mockup image later on.

If there's anything you can do, don't hesitate to post!

Regards,
Winter

I was goofing around last night and decided to try my hand at this.

http://ftp://12.149.180.130/UFO-AI.zip

I created on sound possibly for the Geoscape, and one for the Electrolaser.

If either are headed in the correct direction, let me know.  I'll play around some more with Geoscape sounds.  If they're way off, let me know as well, and I'll try and work with you to get what you want.

i like both of them - but whether the electro laser sound is suitable or not ... that's Winter's or BTAxis' decision

I like both of them as well, but the electrolaser sound is missing something to imply arcing electricity. You should look around on the internet and listen to what it sounds like in real life. Here's a good example:

License?

Umm.. One is comprised of some free sound clips I found on the web.  Cut and pasted several parts together, then fed them through WavePad to distort, pitch alter, etc them...

The other is a sample from an Annie Lenox song that I modified the hell out of in a similar fasion.

Umm... License?  (shrug)

so, if you got all materials from kosher sources (sounds like you have not), you need to say the magic words "creative commons"

I was trying to find a decent sample to work from last night and couldn't.  I didn't think about doing it from video sources.  If the way I'm creating these is allowed, I'll sample out something from that 500kV video or the 345kV video on the same site and use those to make improvements to the one I made last night.

I was trying to do the electrical arc sound, and closest I got last night was a firework that sounded close.  It's what you hear as the last part of of the one I made last night.

that won't work for the Annie Lenox parts - because even derived work is still copywrited

Okay-

Try this set:
http://ftp://12.149.180.130/UFO%20AI%20Sounds.zip

The Electrolaser sound is comprised of bits and pieces of things I found on the web, as stated before.  I incorporated part of the audio from the video that Winter linked.  If these sources aren't kosher, I'll just scrap the sound and start from scratch.

The others in the zip file all come from sine waves I generated at various frequencies, then modified.  Can't see how they're not legit for use. :P

I included a READ ME with suggested uses for them, but by all means, apply them as you all see fit.  I realized they all have a fairly similar sound/feel.... I was trying to keep them somewhat consistant, but also, I'm very much a newb and I find there's only so much I can do with a generated steady-tone sine wave as my base.

Maybe with some more time, and some more experience, I can produce a wider variety of stuff for the geoscape.

Edit: 30 seconds after posting  :D
AFterthought-
Cound someone offer me some help getting an IRC client running and connected to your channel?  I'd love to get some "live" feedback and chat with you guys.  Just never used IRC before...

I like the electrolaser sound now, but I'm not sure on the sources -- mattn will have to make the decision on whether or not it's compatible with UFO:AI.

Can you give a list (with urls) of these sounds, so I would check whether we won't break any permissions by using your work, please?

They came from the FX section of WavCentral.com, the video that was linked above, and a few sine-waves that I generated.

BlakeD, I searched the whole wavcentral.com site for their license, but there is none (or at least i am unable to find one). None license does not mean no copyrights so unfortunately we cannot use that electrolaser sound. Pity, because it rocks - maybe you are able to prepare similar but on your own (or by using other samples with proper licenses)?

I'll see what I can do.  Give me some time... I'll tell you up front, I'll be aiming for creating roughly the same sound, I'll just do it with a other sources... I say that so you won't be freaked out if the new one sounds similar to the old.

Is the Videos.Google source an okay one?

That is pretty OK as long as you take the sources with proper licenses and give us the info (see the other topic where I just mentioned CC licenses which are "valid" for us; also GPL is OK).

As long as the files in there are released under proper licenses - yes. But somehow I doubt it.

There's a new version on my FTP server:

ftp://12.149.180.130/UFO AI Sounds.zip

Included in the ZIP are the source files from the http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/  website someone linked before.  (I'm assuming this site will be found to be a kosher source; if not, I'm not sure I want to screw with this much more.)  The only additional materials are the video clip that Winter linked, and a set of sweeping logimetric sine waves that I generated and freely relinquish all rights to over to the project.

I'm thinking of playing with the sound a bit more, but am torn... The build-up can either be the laser, or it could be the eletricals generating the needed charge.  Not sure how it would be.

Feedback is always welcome.

i don't think that the google video will be good as source - there is no statement about the license there.

could you please also provide the info which sound based on which files? which is entirely yours and what the licenses are in special?

Okay, I posted a new file on my FTP server.

It has:
GeoScape Sound 2, 3, 4, and 6.  These were all created entirely by me via sine waves.  I will release them under whatever license you find easiest / most convienent.

ElectroLaser - This is a composite of sine waves from me, and samples from other sounds that I have put into the ElectroLaser Sources folder.

The READ_ME has the full description of what sounds the Electrolaser is composed of, the license it was released under, and a link to the source page for THAT SPECIFIC sound so if you need it, you have it.

I hope that's enough for you guys.  Let me know.

Yes, that is pretty enough. Your sounds are commited to repository and will be enabled soon. Thank you very much.

What can I build next? =)

Yeah, decided I'm not done yet... I want to play around some more.  Need more Geoscape sounds?

BTW - If I can get some donated time from a local recording studio, I'm going to TRY and convince my wife to do some female combat sounds / screams for us.  Doubt I'll get the time, and even more, I doubt my wife will agree...  But I'll try.

Take a look at "[WANTED] footsteps sounds" topic.

Can you use these for something? I was trying to get a rave thing done on a synth and got something that sounded very electrical so I figured you guys might be able to use it. I made various wave dumps of it. Short and long ones playing different notes. Feel free to improve.

Also, footsteps are a bitch to record. You really need a good mic and noisefree environment to get proper samples of that.
