Title: length of effect for objects
Post by: jcjordan on November 09, 2012, 06:05:50 am
With the current (nov 5th) 2.5 version, how long do smoke grenades last as well as the gas grenades? In the previous version of 2.5 I had from early Oct it was just through the aliens turn. My frame refresh rate drops way down when I use one. Any thing else I might do to increase the FPS as far as preferences as I'm sure it's mostly due to my laptop but I was wondering if there might be something I'm missing or something to try.

After latest changes the smoke should last four rounds (one round = player turn + alien turn + civ turn).

The drop in FPS is a common problem. Iirc Crystan provided a solution here in the forums, but i cannot find the related thread right now.

This really should be fixed in base if possible. I have yet to see a machine that isn't rendered nearly unplayable by those particles. It's not a matter of system quality, they really seem to take all they can get.

Well for me they work without any problems - with active physic simulation and my hardware isn't the best (~2 years old). GF GTX 460, Intel Q8400. But physim of smoke isnt a must have feature, so i think we can live without it. :P

Yeah, mine beats that and if I toss a smoke grenade the mission becomes unplayable above ground. Underground is okay though for some strange reason.

In my game install most/all the files are left as pk3 files & seem to be unzipped when I start the game. I need to try to do Crystan's fix for the smoke grenades but my ufos file is still zipped. What effect would it be for me to unzip that file & leave it unzipped as far as gameplay? Should I unzip just to make the change then rezip it back to a pk3 file? Also as far as the .ufo files contained therein, what program would I use to edit them?

You can extract the .pk3 and use the files without problems. To edit them use a raw text editor, as notepad++.

You dont need to extract the pk3s. Use the newest fix version. http://ufoai.org/forum/index.php/topic,6755.msg56217.html#msg56217 (the zip just have a predefined folder structure for an easier installation)

Thanks Crystan, seems to be working fine now w/ that fix. Will that be in future releases or will I have to redo that for next time?
