I usually play games in windowed mode because fullscreen games tend to lower my brightness/gamma for no reason, and I like to do other stuff while playing them. I tried windowed mode with UFO:AI but it repeatedly lowers my brightness no matter what I do, and it seems to take the entirety of my system priority because attempting to do anything outside of the game -- even in the main menu -- is useless, since everything else runs cripplingly slow alongside it. Can I see a fix to these issues sometime? I'd really like to play this game but these two things are stopping me.

You're rather low on operating memory, i've just checked that ufo allocates ~645 MB of virtual memory, so with just 512 a lot of paging may be going on and slowing everything down.
About that brightness, you can't just set it higher through the video options?, i don't think i understand the problem.
