Hi people,
I use Windows Vista Ultimate, 1,5Gb of Ram, P4 Prescott 3.4Ghz...
ATI Radeon X800 256Mb...
And when I try to start UFO:AI I receive the error:
"Couldn't register windows class"
I know that error is when we not have the 3D drivers, but I have!!!
I play COD, NFL2007, Age 3, Flight Simulator X, and all perfect...
Anybody help-me?
thanks a lot.

do you have aero activated? please try to deactivate it.
which version are you using (ufo version) the one from http://mattn.ninex.info ? if not you should use it - otherwise you would not be able to save games.
please let me know whether you encountered any more problems (if you get ufo to run) - because i did the vista patches without owning vista. it would be nice to get some feedback,
-
Yes, I have aero activated...
I have the UFO 2.0 RC6, from sourceforge, the full pack...
From that site (http://mattn.ninex.info) you think that version is better to me?! (2.1?)
Now, I'm work (I live in Portugal, GMT), but at nigh I will test it.
Thanks a lot.
-
yes - that version has some file-save-patches for vista included - with rc6 you won't be able to save a multiplayer team or a game state (at least if you are not the administrator - which you should be)
-
my friend...
First I disable the aero...
That version (mattn..) does not work in vista.. when I try start come to message "this programs not responding" and don't open.
The normal version (sourceforge) don't work too...
Now, what can I do?
thanks a lot

there was a wrong zlib1.dll packed into this installer. replace the zlib1.dll with the one from zlib.net or grab this version of hte installer: http://mattn.ninex.info/download/ufoai-2.1-dev-win32-r6697.exe
thanks again for testing this for vista
-
ok, at night I will test and tell you the results...
it is a pleasure to test the game..
thank you
-
well...well... I make a download of full package (rev 6697)
I'm very sad... does not work again...
Now I receive the error:
"NSIS ERROR
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damged disk, a failed download or a virus.
You may want to contact the authot of this installer to obtain a new copy.
It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED)."
and the OK button...
I make the download 3 times and the same... and in the two last times, I make the download in my home, where I have a 24Mbits of link...
Not is a problem in download.

in a way that you have:
base/maps
base/music
base/textures
base/sounds
[....]
and retry please
please also have a look at the ufoconsole.log which should be in your home dir (application data) in ufoai/.ufoai/base
thanks

I tried some of the stuff you suggested, but no dice. Here's the snippet of the log that seemed most useful:
...could not set to language:
...could not set to system language
Console initialized.
couldn't load history
------- Loading ref_gl.dll -------
ref_gl version: GL 0.12
Initializing OpenGL display
...setting mode 6: 1024 768 FS
...attempting fullscreen
...using desktop frequency: 50 hz
...using desktop display depth of 32
...calling CDS: ok
GLimp_Init() - no hardware acceleration detected
VID_CreateWindow() - GLimp_InitGL failed
ref_gl::R_SetMode() - invalid mode
Initializing OpenGL display
...setting mode 3: 640 480 W
ref_gl::R_Shutdown() - wglMakeCurrent failed
...setting windowed mode
GLimp_Init() - no hardware acceleration detected
VID_CreateWindow() - GLimp_InitGL failed
ref_gl::R_SetMode() - could not revert to safe mode
ref_gl::R_Init() - could not R_SetMode()
Seems like OpenGL isn't working very well. I'm running on a thinkpad T43P, so the FireGL v3100 card in it should be able to do OpenGL just fine. Could it be that the Vista drivers don't have OpenGL support just yet?
-
I went to ATI and installed the Radeon Mobility X300 drivers (they didn't have any FireGL drivers for some reason, so I used the enthusiast equivalent), and the game works now.
-
WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But now, I'm not sure what make the game work, because I extract the *.zip files and update the ATI drivers...
But now, works perfectly...
Thanks a lot,
best regards...

I tried unzipping the files before, but doing that alone did not work. Not sure if only replacing the driver will fix things. If not, then there could be a bug in the installer. Ah well, it's still a dev build, so I'm not overly concerned as long as I can get it to work!

Hi there. I've been running ufo:ai on vista too, but I've been running RC6, not the latest beta. I don't remember any specific install issues, but I've installed quite a bit of software and lots of issues have come up. If there was something amiss, I fixed it without a big hassle.
I'm going to grab up the latest beta and try it out for a bit. I've been experiencing lock ups of my video driver (but vista resets it w/o crashing) but that probably has more to do with this laptop's video arrangement. Anyways, I think this game is a great piece of work. Improving on a really excellent game is hard to do, but it's obvious you'll have succeeded as soon as you're 'finished' (the quotes are there cause I know how these open source things go, you're never fully finished until it has every appropriate feature imagined).
So thanks, and though I'm not a strong programmer, I'll do what I can to chip in.
