I have a question ... I play at the easiest difficulty available and yet I keep failing the game, this seems to happen at random places in the game like there is no real defined parameters for endgame. I can reload a game saved about a day (game time) earlier and then it will play without it. I've also seen this several times after completing a tactical mission, where I might have lost a soldier but nothing more. It's getting rather annoying ...
-
So... What's the question?
-
oops, sorry :-)
What exactly are the conditions for losing ?
-
You loose when the nation's happiness status goes under the minimum level requested by the difficult you have chosen. You can see the nation's happines level by clicking the botton "statistics".
-
So only one country needs to be unhappy... bummer, I always liked to fund my own operation by producing and selling alien weaponry ... and then giving a damn about the happiness of the countries

You are supposed to protect the Earth...

Hi Aaangel,
I realised that probably u were quite far into the game??
Btw, could you provide the version of the game u r playing too??
U failed because of.... ?
1) Too many civilians died ? (1 of the earlier versions dictacts that u can only have say up to 60 civilians dying before losing.....tat sux, and IMHO it was bad. AND hence, it has been since removed in the current developments....)
2) You fail because all your nations were generally very unhappy? In which i suggest that you should reconsider your play - hunt every UFOs, clear every mission...... try not to get too many civi killed, though this i dun thnk can be helped......
3) Did u fail because u ran out of money? lol. This is very bad, cos, IMO, its VERY hard to run out of money if u manage properly.....

You are supposed to protect the Earth...
and I do, the needs of the few out weigh the needs of the many ;-)
UFO: Alien invasion 2.2.1 x86 Apr 28 2008 Win32 RELEASE
I should probably add here that I'm running Win Vista on a X64 machine.

That would sound very likely. Well I guess downloading a stable version was a mistake, I'll try a more recent. Any guidance to where I can get some more recent binaries ?

Eh. While there are several gameplay fixes and a greatly streamlined UI, I wouldn't do that if I were you; the dev versions are quite buggy atm (May 17).
If you wanna see the super-sexah interface though, go to: http://ufoai.ninex.info/forum/index.php?topic=3462.0

I agree with Ildamos, that the 2.3-dev now are still undergoing HEAVY developments, and u will encounter alot of bugs issues alrite. But the experience is way cooler! :P
This should be the latest thread page for that discussion Ildamos pasted:
See this instead for last entry (http://ufoai.ninex.info/forum/index.php?topic=3462.30)
Though i recommend u get that for just a feel of the new interface, rather than 'playing it so it can complete'.
It is VERY VERY far from completion mind u. :P

Well I'm a coder myself (I was lead coder for Coolmon 2), so I understand. But I'll have a look anyway, who knows mayby I'll be able to help you guys out :-)

Hey hey Aaangel, welcome to the UFOAI Community!
:D
Btw, curious about your nick - wat is Aaangel? An Angelic Angel?
-
Believe it or not, it's actually my name - My full name is Christian Aaangel

Are there any console commands for cheating ... like finishing buildings faster, give more money. So I can get on with the testing instead of the gaming ? :-)
-
There are. They start with 'debug_'. Try typing that in the console and pressing TAB, it'll give you a list of possible commands.
That's an unusual name, by the way. How do you pronounce it?
-
Hey I'm danish so that's why it's so unusual
-
Sorry to be such a pain in the a..., however I don't get a possible list, only an ability to set the values 1, 2, 3 or 7 to the variable.
A little more information would be nice
-
Oh, sorry, I forgot 2.2.1 didn't have that functionality yet. The commands were called differently in that version. Also, if you aren't running a debug-compiled build, the debug commands won't work.
-
My bad, forgot to mention I've upgraded to 2.3, but I still only get the very limited options.

-
I only get a debug map listing ...
It's autocompletes to debug_map and that's it.
Using x64 Vista SP1
-
Are you sure your build is a debug build? It should say so on the main menu if it is. If it isn't, it'll say RELEASE, and you can't use the debug commands.
-
Aaangel,
U will need a DEBUG version (see startup menu screen bottom left) - it should state the version, the date compiled and a RELEASE or DEBUG word. If its compiled by Destructavator or myself, most likely it is. If SVN self compile, under Codeblocks (aka CB here), u will need to go "Build -> Select Target -> Windows Debug".
I will be compiling a new version anyway, if u wan to d/l the easy way, will take me 1/2 a day @ work though. :)

What exactly are the conditions for losing ?
In particular, how many nations need to be below the minimum happiness ?
I finally understood what those percentages mean in the difficulty description. A nation gives you happiness * its max funding credits at the start of a month, so that nation's exact happiness can be calculated. Should be explained better. I happened to get that warning about a nation being below the happiness minimum. However, the game didn't end right away at least, and the nation is now above again. Until radar coverage is sufficient, it's problematic to take care for *all* nations.
That happiness minimum is kinda useless btw, since you desperately need the money anyway, so nations should all be exuberant.
EDIT
I found it in the source. Seems that with 8 nations, 3 are allowed to be below the happiness limit.
There seems to be a bug btw, description for NATIONBELOWLIMITPERCENTAGE implies 4 are allowed, but >= is used, thus it ends already when nationBelowLimit is 4, see cp_campaign.cpp line 395 and following. Most of the time at least...unless that defined constant creates rounding error etc.
