yeah, well, Destructavator (mind if I call you Dave?) , thanks. I didn't think i was being bold, just making some recordings for fun is all.  ;)

So, I tried again with my slightly less crappy mic, and here goes.

it's not as bad as the first one, I might say, but still, I'm not saying its the best sounding clip ever.

oh, and MCR. thank you. :) the click was a accident, im not really sure what it was but it sounded good so I copied it between the sounds at the start to see if it worked...

right... well... wish me luck... here goes nothing...

I'v added my first example file as a attachment here, tell me what you think? even i think they are kinda poor, but i was kinda rambling...   :-\

also, I'm gonna take a stab at reading a research Proposal out, and see how that goes. might be a little easier for me since I work better with a script.  ;)

still, what do you think of this horrific first try?

oh, and I'm stuck on what CC to pick. I don't really care what happens to it, so long as i get a little mention in the credits somewhere, I'm good to go, so what one do i pick?

edit: OH, bear in mind, i DO have access to a better mic, just not right now, so im using the mic in my laptop screen... yeah... explains the crappy-ness a bit, no?

well, i gather from your site you've got quite some skill, so while i will do a little cleaning of the audio, you may want to make a few changes. so, hows sharp breathing, grunting and the such? would that do?

as for the licence... yeah... creative commons?

I know of a few voice acting sites that contain many different people of many different races. if you want I can have a look around and see if they could do some samples, perhaps the good luck e-mail from the beginning of the game would be good?

also I've happily do some voice acting, I'm a English speaker of British accent, so i hope that okay. my microphone isn't necessarily the best in the world, so I will most likely edit the sound a little afterwards. silly simple things like noise removal and pitch lowering, you know?. but if you are cool with that, I'll see what I can do. Wordless pain sounds, right?

awhile ago, I whipped out my copy of Alpha Centauri, the great turn-based game, and I realised that one of its coolest features was whenever you researched something, you got a really cool sound file of some random person telling you about it. there is nothing quite like having some random old dude tell you about synthetic oil, now is there?

now, I was thinking, if we can gather enough voice actors to a record a file for each research proposal and result in UFO, respectively, It would massively boost the games atmosphere. finding voice actors for each of scientists and such would be kind of difficult, not to mention trying to find a full cast for each of the different languages games available in but, the overall result would be a much deeper feel the game which draws the player in and keeps them hooked. I think, if we could spare the time and the resources, this should definitely be on TODO list.

I would volunteer my voice, but, due to the fact only sixteen, I doubt my voice is very suitable, but I'm sure we can find some people to fill the jobs.

then again, I could always just lower the pitch, that seems to work quite well... but, no one's interested in hearing me speak, are they?

I'm lazy and cant be bothered to work out how to svn it all so i came here looking to download but for some reason, i cant download mutons build, what's up with that?.

it starts to download, then suddenly skips forward to complete and when i run it, all I get is "installer integrity check has failed"  :'(

sarin, that's exactly what I mean, I'v just had trouble wording it.

its just an idea, but extra headgear is a must have for this game.

ah, the plasma blade. nothing quite like sticking that bitch to some aliens face.  :D

still, I'll stick to a flamer. you can use them at somewhat of range and get reaction shots with it.

well, remember, these were only ideas.

yeah, the 'not reaction fire' thing. I was thinking, if your wearing these goggles, your vision would be  somewhat impaired, leading to a small chance of being able to SEE, let alone shoot at, anyone moderately close. and, the accuracy bonus to aimed shot's was only an example, I would guess that a aimed shot and higher would massively benefit from the effects. snapshots would still get a bonus, but considerably less then any truly aimed shot, after all, what's the use of a targeting computer if you don't take time to make use of it? then its nothing more but a supped up scope.

yeah, good point about the IR goggles. not sure how that slipped me. as for the brain wave one, I made that post late a night, so I probably wasn't thinking straight. but surely it's possible to pick up that telepathic link the aliens have.

3. What's the use? Right now soldiers have unlimited range, no need for binocs.

I was thinking more of a high accuracy bonus that made aimed shots a lot more deadly for only slightly more  TU's, for example, turning a good shot with a laser rifle into a sniper. nothing to do with the actual sight range of the troops.

also, your camera idea would be good. but, if I'm getting you right, it sounds like its effect is sorta like what the electro-flare did from xcom stuck to a camera.

can't think of any situation where the flamer would be more useful than the machine gun.

*points at first post*

but... but... I make very good use of flamers during ufo and building attacks!  :-[

also, as a 'surprise-butt-sex' ambush weapon, it works far better than the machine gun AND the nade launcher put together...

Hmm... a machine-gun and a grenade launcher put together... i might not be onto something!

Feature Requests / headgear ideas.
« on: March 07, 2010, 10:50:04 pm »
Since the game is seemingly lacking in the headgear for your troops, I came up with a few ideas:

THERMAL-GOGGLES: we have night vision one's, why not thermal? allowing detection of heat signatures trough thin walls in a, say, 12 space range while making it harder to shoot at anything outside of that range a lot harder.

BRAINWAVE DETECTION GOGGLES: I'm thinking, based on the research into the alien brain, it might be possible to create a set of goggles that, while not saying were the aliens are, would display a threat counter that would tell the user of the amount of alien brain waves in the area and how threatening this is. e.g. a wounded, non armoured, alien armed with a plasma pistol, would be low threat, while a group of particle cannon wielding, reaction-fire ready drunk and disgruntled Scotsmen aliens would be high threat.

'ZOOM' GOGGLES: Goggles that are, fundamentally, a set of targeting computers stuck to some Binoculars for your troops, boosting the long range Capabilities of a soldier while making shots take some more TU's and making reaction shots almost impossible.

So, are they any good?

coil-gun? *facepalm* ah, freck... I knew there were still some weapons I hadn't tried yet!

thanks sarin for you input. yeah, like you said, i have given all my personal laser pistols, it was pretty fast and easy to make 8 of them, and the work like a charm!

I'v tried a heavy laser in the past, and well, i didn't like it. it chewed though df packs way to fast and, while powerful, i was unable to get any good response shots because my laser-riflemen always did it first. but, as for the grenade launcher, it complements my rush and flush style so I'm gonna use it from now on.

My current problem is churning out all the DF packs I'm Gonna be needing.  ;)

ah.  ;D i thought you meant something like that.

yeah, i like the idea. a bigger sniper rifle that isn't the bolt gun would be nice.
