The AI programmer for Xenonauts is setting out his concepts and methods at his blog. There are just two posts so far:

misses grouping between aliens, imho.
could be a value in their a* landscape matrix, and would enable some interesting role co-op.
rather than aliens very obviously acting alone otherwise.
