There are several things you can do to speed up the release.
First of all head over to the wiki and have a look at the TODO-list (http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/TODO)
other task you can do:
- We need reports for maps. Please check whether there are any glitches in the maps right now. Missing models, unreachable areas, and so on... Please submit screenshots of the problems. Use "developer 1" (type this into the console) to show missing models in console and send these strings, too
- The best would be to send a fixed map :-)
- Check the wiki for open translations (http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/Translating) or spellcheck already translated articles
- Found a bug? add it to the bug tracker (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=157793&atid=805242)!
- Opengl problem? e.g. black geoscape or wrong textures on some models? use r_checkerror cvar and set it to 1 - report the console output (ufoconsole.log - see faq)
- ... maybe this list is going to be extended - but check back the TODO-list (http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/TODO) in our wiki if you wanna help.

New release candidate - 2.0-RC3 | July 19th 2006 | Mattn
... inform us about the bugs you found via the bug tracker.
I have seen many answers to bugreports as "already fixed in SVN xxxx".
This means wasted time on the side of the user, testing an obsolet version,
and wasted time on the side of the developers, looking at + answering such
reports.
It also leads to frustration, and maybe lost users.
I suggest to release updated versions/RCs more often,
say once a week or after each dozen new fixes in svn.
Offering these updates as official xdelta-patches would also help a lot.
-
i know people dont want to put themselves on a time limit... this coming from my experiance playing online games.... but is there a general ETA on rc5?
-
The releases are quite large, and a lot of people don't/can't use SVN, since the models, textures and sounds will mostly stay the same, could we save some bandwidth by seperating the binaries from the objects? On a dial-up line, 150+ megs is a pain to download. :D
-
I think we used to have them for a while, but it turned out to be impractical. A lot changes that isn't in the binaries. So I'm afraid it's either sticking to the big releases, or getting an SVN client.
-
Hi I'm new here, not sure about the correct system of bug reporting yet, but I did notice in one map - the one on the docks with 3 ships, there is a small concrete jetty on the opposite side of the map near the most distant boat, which looks like you should be able to walk over it to get to the tower on the end... but you can't get onto it. Also, there was an alien in that tower.
After searching all the boats and everything, thinking maybe the jetty was a no go area - or maybe thinking the map was broken and wasn't letting me win, I spotted the alien and managed to snipe it, but there was no way I could walk over that pier.
edit --I just found the bugs section of the forum - sorry mod's can someone shift this please?
-
Alex no problem - but please open a bug item on our tracker at: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=157793&atid=805242
and please add some screenshots [shortcut: f12] to this bugitem - thanks

Ehm. It's still not out. I think I read in your site that 2.2 is coming out "soon". I already posted an article in my blog (http://shazbot.blogsome.com/2007/10/12/ufo-ai-and-alien-arena-updates-soon-to-be-released/) about it alerting my friends and we are all excited about the upcoming release.
Estimated time of completion? Thanks for any hints or straight, helpful answers.
-
we are still bugfixing - and there are some translations in the wiki and in the po file that needs a review

this is done on the beta installer page
-
Cool. Thanks for the info.
Let me know if you need a 2D artist for wikis, etc. I have two samples in www.thefivepillars.com if you want to see.
http://thefivepillars.org/help.php?type=u&id=4402
http://thefivepillars.org/help.php?type=s&id=4404
In January I'll be buying a Wacom or an equivalent and will be glad to help what I can.
-
very nice, we could definitly need some 2d artists. we need paintings for some of the ufopedia articles like e.g. http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/Research/UFO_Theory - stuff where we don't have models for - but BTAxis and Winter can tell you more here.
a list:
http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/Research/Alien_Origins
http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/Research/UFO_Theory
maybe there are more but i'm not sure, some paintings are already in http://ufoai.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/ufoai/ufoai/trunk/base/pics/techs/
but be aware, that you have to put this under gpl or creative commons attribution or creative commons attribution share alike - otherwise we can't use the content in the game

We would be extremely happy to have another 2d artist on board. Please have a look at the two articles linked in Mattn's post, and let me know if you're interested in hashing out a design for them.

I looked at the articles and they are about research. May I do some alien paintings?
Are there no close up screenshots of the various alien species? I have not installed this game yet as I am waiting for the version that has a fully functional interception phase.
Sorry for the delay in replying; work has been hectic the past days.
-
What do you mean, "fully functional"? We already have working interceptions in that it's possible to shoot down UFOs, though if I have anything to do with it the mechanics will drastically change in the future (but not anytime soon).
-
I gave away copies of the game to my friend to spread the word about this freeware and the feedback I got was there were no interceptions.
There was also a thread somewhere here about "where are the ufos?", which further validated their claims.
I am now officially confused. There are interceptions? If so, I'll install the game within the day, if someone replies.
About my query, are there screenshots that detail the aliens? All I see are models. (It'd be better if I see them ingame.) Thanks.
-
If you spread 2.1.1, then I guess you're right about there not being UFOs. You might want to wait for 2.2, which should be released soon. Or you can grab a beta installer right now. The final release should be fairly close to the current betas. You can get them here (http://mattn.ninex.info/?page=Download).
About the aliens, all we have is the models. What more were you expecting to see? Or do you mean you want to see how the models look ingame?
-
What do you mean, "fully functional"? We already have working interceptions in that it's possible to shoot down UFOs,
I replied to that above. And then you say
f you spread 2.1.1, then I guess you're right about there not being UFOs.
Of course I gave away that version. I don't give away betas in fear my friends might badmouth bugs. Your first question therefore is somewhat perplexing.
Also why all these questions? Your "What more..." strikes me as hostile. I just want to help with 2D art for your web site. For free. If you do not want it, it's fine with me.
-
Sorry about that. I'm so used to playing the 2.2 beta that I forget many people are still using 2.1.1.
As for my questions, I'm trying to figure out what you mean. You say you want to see screenshots of the aliens, but then you say that all you see are models. Isn't that what you wanted?
-
I looked at the articles and they are about research. May I do some alien paintings?
What we really need is paintings to go with that research, to show in art what the research is about. However, if you really want to paint the aliens, then go ahead, we can probably use it somewhere.
Are there no close up screenshots of the various alien species?
As BTAxis said, that doesn't make much sense. A screenshot is a screenshot. You can find the gallery here: http://ufoai.ninex.info/gallery/game-characters/
If you mean paintings, then no, we don't have paintings of every species.
Regards,
Winter
-
@BTAxis: No problem.
@BTAxis and Winter: Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was ingame screenshots showing aliens and humans in a firefight. I am particularly curious about those hulking things and that spider drone. This way I could see size comparisons and other details not apparent in model screenshots where the races are just standing with arms away from their torsos.
@Winter: Ah. So you want art for the research topics only? Where will my art be placed (if you guys will approve of it)? And yes it's free but all I ask is giving credit to me for creating it. (like placing a popup "Created by: Artist's Name" everytime someone hovers their cursor on the art.) Is this possible?
Ehm, research is boring but I'll make that "injector" thing that powers the ufos if you want. (just give me rough descriptions so I'll have a rough idea of what you guys want.
Late reply; sorry about this. Work, RL, etc.
More power to the project!

No, sorry, this is not possible. we can of course add you to the contributors list on the website - and if you send a patch for the sequence script (base/ufos/seq_credits.ufo) we can also add you here, but there will be no tooltips.
best regards
martin
-
Ah. Darn. No problem though; I'll just put a small signature on the picture then.
Btw, solid writing in the wiki. Who made that? I've been doing some reading and the alien descriptions and the background story are solid! Good work! ;D

It's a very good thing you have this thread here. You should include the changes I made for easier access to other parts of the project pages though. (I also fixed a link) Quote this post to see the bbcode for the following:

The TODO-list (http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/TODO) has not art items for 2.3.
-
Hello,
I would like to support you but there are a lot of open topics and I don't know what of them to do.
I've never coded C/C++ (sry, only Java), but I got some (little) experience with Hibernate and in building plugins for eclipse.
I'm specialized in algorithms (there are people who like complexity theory ;-)). So if you have use for this, I can try about this.
Otherwise I can do some translations.
Greetings zyrano
-
Is there another account needed for editing articles and so on? When I try to work on the translations in a different tab, it says that login is needed (Cookies are accepted, using Firefox on Ubuntu Linux 7.10).
zyrano
-
Yes, to edit the wiki you have to have a wiki account, which is different from your forum account.
-
Where or how are we allowed to edit in the Wiki? I would like to start working on the Interceptors and UFO's section, adding in pages for the Stingrays, etc. and putting in any firm information that is available on them.
Brett
-
It's a wiki, register and start editing :D
-
Though, there are some sections which people are asked to leave. eg some of the equipment descriptions.
Having said that, if you see something which you are sure is out of date, edit it. If you accidentally do wrong, someone will let you know, and reverting is easy.
-
could someone port the beta installers to MAC?
-
If you ever need a concept artist or some 2D stuff, I might be able to oblige.
You have a neat project going here, and I for one look forward to seeing how it turns out.
-
We always need artists of any variety. Shimmy over to the artwork forum to get more details.
-
Speaking of helping you guys out...without being able to run UFO: AI, I can't test anything I make in-game to see if it works. :-[
I can still make things tough, alltouhg I've en kinda busy and absent-minded lately.
If you need more research images I can always do those.
Oh yeah...finish that heavy needler....
EDIT: I notice the StarChaser still isn't in the 2.2.3. Are there any problem with the mesh?
-
helloo...im new here too and id love to help out if i can... great game btw :)
1. the only place to report a bug for 221 is in the sourceforge site??
2. if thats the case you will probably lose some people just because they d be bored to start 2 new accounts just to report a few bugs..just a thought...

Hello and welcome.
I don't think we would lose people just because that.
Also 2.2.1 is quite old, if you wanna help speeding up the next release use the latest development version. The source from the SVN is the best but a third party build can do it as well (like odie's build in the sticky (Windows) thread)
I think we didn't dismiss any report just because it was not reported on SF. But still that's the preferred location for them.

I have a suggestion, or rather a request, in order to speed up the speeding up.
Would it be possible to assign a contact person to each point on the todo list?
That is, an name or link to whoever made the last changes / largest contributions to that area or simply has an overview of the state of things. In short, the person to connect with if one wants to contribute to a certain point.
I know that this is open source and everybody can go and make changes as he wishes. Still, I for one like to talk to people before I go about modifying their work, and nobody wants to waste time on unnecessary (parallel) developments because they didn't know it was already being done.
And while it is possible to find out these things by searching and asking in the forums, at least having a name makes things easier imo.
Alternatively, a pinned "most recent state of things" in each dev forum might help new people like me in their orientation, if someone is willing to keep those updated.
-
@Vio:
Not sure if you request is still valid, because meanwhile you have learned more about how this project works. But others might want to know too, so I'm posting.
Most changes are discussed between multiple devs (storyline, game balance, coders,...) before being implemented, so there usually is no *single* person to talk to.
Imho it's best to post a brief concept in an appropriate forum. Hint: make it obvious in the title that *you* want to do (most of) the work, because in times of heavy bugfixing feature requests might get a little less attention ;)
-
My concern was less about entirely new features (for which this would certainly be a good solution) than modifications to existing things.
Say somebody had a good idea, but is unsure about just going ahead and coding it. He doesn't know whether someone else is already working on that particular part, whether there are concepts to follow, or plans that have already bee decided on, and is generally new to the area.
Searching and posting in the forums is a way, but it is tedious and unreliable imo. The info may be outdated, and some post saying "I'd like to help with x" could easily be missed by those it concerns.
A talk with the most recent author, otoh, could fill him in on the situation, future plans, other contributors, and the ways they could work together in a matter of one or two messages.
It would make things quicker and easier. That's all I'm saying.

If still a few translations lack the only one what 2.3 are need, I would start with pleasure to plays.
I point I have said it quite frequent, but your play is a class and I can hardly wait to get again into the old UFO fealing.
By the way, are her Moderators at the moment on the forum side? I have already sent some PMs to you, but have never got an answer.

Who did you send messages to? If you don't want to post openly in the forum I'd suggest talking to Mattn, he knows much better German than I do.

-
@Ain
@Destructavator
Thx.

So he wrote a message to Mattn, but Mattn does not seem to answer him. Maybe he doesnt get the message? If you read this Mattn, here is someone who wants to talk to you :)
@ VaeliusNoctu
deutsch: Vielleicht solltest du deine Nachricht einfach hier reinschreiben.
english: Maybe you should post your question here. Maybe someone else can help you too. And please, if possible try to write in english.

Goodness! I was actually going to finish my dual-posted message addressing all of VaeliusNoctu's comments, except that I was doing it in sections with the "edit" button but before I could submit a final post my internet service died, courtesy of a nasty winter storm. I didn't have Internet for several days, and got back online just now.
@Ain Soph Aur: Thanks for jumping in while I was offline.
Side note: For those that know German for real, how close (awful) was my grammer? Was I even partially understandable? :P
As for posting in English with a translator, I personally don't mind if it is double-posted (or whatever you want to call it) in two languages at once, in fact in my case it makes it easier because I can compare both versions and grab pieces from both to get the whole message better - but Mattn should make the final decision on forum posting guidelines.

no problem.
the first sentence was perfect. but you could replace "Ihnen" with "dir" because thats more personal.
the second sentence was understandable but to be honest, i wouldn't call it good :)
but we should come back to the main topic here.

Just curious: was it really *your* German or some bablefish ?
-
Just curious: was it really *your* German or some bablefish ?
It was mine, which is why it was so awful - I think the first sentence was better because it has words and phrases I've used before, while for the next one I was doing grammatical gymnastics that were new to me, that I had to build one word at a time and then hope. I prefer to do German "manually" and not with some automatic translator, web-based or otherwise, because otherwise I wouldn't learn anything. The closest I get is using a dictionary for single words if I really can't remember something.
(That's why I value feedback.)

(That's why I value feedback.)
-
Destructavator,
so I understand you speak german to some extent AND want to improve it.
Ok, I'll keep that in mind in case I run into some place where you can practice.
Here is the bablefish translation for your amusement:
"Zu wem schickten Sie Mitteilungen? Wenn Sie don' t möchten im Forum I' öffentlich bekannt geben; d schlagen vor, mit Mattn zu sprechen, er spricht viel besser deutsch als ich tun."
Well, hard to judge, but I'd say your version is already a little better than bablefish :)

For even more fun, one could run that text through a translator again back into English - I'd bet real money that the result wouldn't match the original English version. In fact, most times when that is done (into one language then back again), the results can be really off-the-wall.
This has gotten rather off-topic - I don't mind discussing this but it doesn't belong in this thread.
I'm totally open to continuing it in a separate topic thread though.
