Windows / Re: Trouble starting 2.2
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:30:51 am »
I had this problem.

I have an eeepc 1101HA. This has Intel Atom processor (dual 1.33Ghz, 2Gb RAM) which has the GMA500 chipset. Intel got some guys called Tungsten to do the graphics stuff, this is why though Intel stuff is all open to Linux and generally works, the GMA500 is a mess.

The solution is updated drivers from Intel. This is described with download links here.

Now if only I could make Oolite visible, and get the recent mods on Mount & Blade to stop giving me RGL errors. Tungsten suxxorz.

Discussion / Re: UFO: Female Invasion?

It is indeed unrealistic.

And realism is very important in a game about fighting an invasion of psychic aliens with lasers and plasma grenades and faster-than-light travel.

Or you could just, you know, play the damned game.

Tactics / Re: What's your favoret load out?
« on: November 13, 2008, 10:22:58 am »
I have only been playing for a short while, but this has been my initial loadout,

4x riflemen - carrying Assault Rifle (3 mags), 2x frags, 2x smoke. Also IR goggles.

1x gunner - carrying Machinegun (3 mags), 2x frags, 2x smoke

1x sniper - carrying Sniper Rifle (3 mags), 2x frags, 2x smoke

1x grenadier - carrying Grenade Launcher (6 HIT mags), + pistol (2 mags)

1x shotgunner - carrying Auto Shotgun (sabots), 2x frags, 2x smoke

Everyone carries a Medikit.

The soldiers pair up, with a rifleman accompanying someone with a heavy weapon. They move in two-person teams. If one is injured then the other heals them with the Medikit.

Where possible, I set up an initial position, lay down smoke as a shield, and try to encourage the aliens to come to us. Usually once you take down one or two most of the rest come running. If they can come running through a nice narrow doorway that's ideal. When they're all gone, we chase down the last few.

When moving around, I try to always have people ready to do multiple rounds of reaction fire - at least one in each pair.

This has worked pretty well thus far, I'll see how it goes over time.

Discussion / Re: Civilians... those little buggers.
« on: November 10, 2008, 06:09:41 am »
if a civilian is smart enough to retreat inside PHALANX' area of control from the get-go, then the aliens will almost never be able to get that civilian. In other words, it'll be too easy to save him/her. Extrapolate this to all civilians on the map, and all PHALANX needs to do to save the civilians is stand around and wait for them to show up.
Not really. Because if all the civilians cluster around the dropship then the soldiers must stay there, and then a good solid zap with something explosive can let the aliens take out all the civilians and the soldiers in one go... and if they stay to protect the civilians, how will the soldiers hunt down all the aliens?

The civilians should at least not run towards the aliens...

Discussion / Soldiers hiding on the dropship?
« on: November 10, 2008, 05:46:03 am »
Gidday all!

So, I bought myself the dropship, loaded it up with eight soldiers, flew off to the alien landing site and...

Only one soldier came out of the ship. The other seven were hiding on the dropship or something, I couldn't select them, not by keypad or by the 1-2-3-etc up the top of the screen.

Of course my poor soldier on her own did not do so well against five aliens...

Am I missing some obvious button to press to unload the other 7 soldiers?
