Title: Slow battle between ships problem
Post by: jcjordan on April 27, 2012, 04:37:47 am
I didn't have this problem in the dev versions but i'm having it in the official release & not sure how to fix but assume it's somewhere in the preference settings. Problem is when I intercept an alien fighter & they battle it out, game becomes clunky & on the edge of a lockup until the battle is done then returns to normal. I don't have the problem when I intercept scouts so I assume it's just when both sides fire at each other. I've tried turning the audio off but still does it just no sounds. Where can I look in the preferences for things to try nothing else has stood out to me on things to try?

I've had this too. I've been able to narrow it down through testing that the slowdown only occurs when the interceptors and the enemy ship are directly on top of each other. If you slow down the game, combat acts correctly right up to that point and then the bug occurs. I've taken to luring ships into my sam/base AA and only ordering my ships to attack when they can kill the ship before they get right on top of them.

Now that you mention it, yep that's what I'm seeing in when they are on top of each other. I've been using the luring tactic for a long time early in the game since ships can barely stand up to fighters early in the game so I do that when I've got missles & lasers installed. This will present a problem later on in the game when the more advanced weapons & fighters are available that can stand up to fighters & larger alien ships by themselves.

This happens to me too when ships of the same speed are right on top of each other. I guess that it comes from two objects trying moving a bit and having to calculate a lot of trig over and over. It's happened to me in some Flash games that I've made.

Attached is my savegame along w/ config & console files that has an intercept from one of my bases to a alien fighter. I've tried slowing the time down, I normally leave it at 20min setting when I've got intercepts going on, as well as zooming in from my current setting as well as turning sounds off - none of which has made a difference. I had a 2.4dev (somewhere in march build I believe) that didn't have this problem & I didn't have sound on the geoscape during intercepts but did have sounds on battlescape on that version. I deleted that version from my pc when I installed the official 2.4 release.

Hi.

I have problem with this bug. I read the thread and follow the link to the bugreport. I found a link for download a stable version, from sankesanders(link: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3516373&group_id=157793&atid=805242) . Is this the 2.4 stable version?

Previously, i downloaded the game from the main page, at this link: http://ufoai.org/wiki/index.php/Download

Thanks

I experienced a lag spike in geoscope arial combat. The Saracen armed with Sparrowhawk and TR - 80 launchers vs Alien Fighter, lag spike every time, if I replace both weapons with plasma weapon the lag is gone.

see http://ufoai.org/forum/index.php/topic,6708.0/topicseen.html

this might be related, too

I've never encountered this problem however I only use stilettos and sparrowhawks.

Yes, the game slows to a screeching halt. When next frame updates, my fps drops to 0.1 frames per second (much less than that in reality) and every few moments some attack sound will play.

I saved a game just before I sent one of my dropships to attack the fighter. Both the "Hammer" and "Scythe" (loadouts of all miniguns and 2 missiles w/ minigun nose respectively) will cause the game to slow if either/or/both happen to come into close dogfighting.

Oddly enough, I had the exact same issue, every single time I sent my 2 stilettos against an enemy that would engage my fighters (with the geoscape message: xxx is attacking yyy) using 2 stilettos with default missile loadout and 2.4 version....

Since I disabled the message setting (on geoscape) so that there is no "pause" when I'm being attacked, it's smooth...

Could totally not be related, but I just don't have the problem anymore after 8+ hours in that game.

Just my 2 cents.

Same glitch, 1 Stiletto vs 1 UFO Fighter. Scouts are fine. Only the Fighers cause this. Windows 7 64-bit, Apr 25 2.4 Stable win-32 build

Edit: Bug fixed in current 2.5-dev build 1342191649

If you don´t mach the speed of the ufo, this not happen. So, i don´t use armor on aircraft.

I also have the same issue. Any fix other than avoiding air interceptions all together ?

fresh install of which version?

Win32 Release version 2.4 (≈969 MB)

It does seem to occur once my Stilletto starting fight point blank with enemy UFOs. If they keep range, it doesn't happen. I just have to put game speed up on high, alt tab and waste time until I hear the battle is over then tab back in and resume.

Same here in windows version 2.4 downloaded about 1 week ago.

I can reproduce each time by luring a fighter to my base with SAM/AAA and releasing 2 local fighters when the UFO is at very close range. So they fight one on top of the other.

I did notice something odd, that the 2nd fighter  doesn't join the fight, instead it shows heading like it's intercepting. Even when the UFO it's right on top of it anyway. :o

With more testing it seems to happen any time any of my flying crafts end up fighting point blank, not just Stilettos. Which is quite often.

I dont see this slowdowns!
Tried both savegames and the config as well
45fps as expected
But im compiling ufoai on my own in my own mingw environment
Its build for at least pentium4 and SSE2

Extract ufoai.zip (http://www.meduniwien.ac.at/user/michael.zellhofer/ufoai.zip) into your ufoai dir and replace existing files ... (save your files before ;))

I will try this ? patch ?

In my case (v2.4), it is not only a FPS reduction, it is like a server lag. Some ships sometimes hang and then move, all of a sudden. I lost one interceptor, because, although being ordered to fight, and having air superiority, he seemed to do even less than the UFO.
