Title: How many bases can you purchase?

1.) How many bases can you purchase before hitting your limit?

2.) Can you put more then one base in a nation's territory?

1) On easy level if you manage to have all nations Exuberant you get maximum around 950,000 credits. That is enough to pay monthly expenses for 4 bases. I have built 6 bases so far, so I cannot answer what is the maximum limit. By my experience so far 8 bases should be enough to cover the whole globe with advanced radars. If not less than 8... ;)

2) Yes. You can build anywhere you want but try to keep the bases as widely spread as possible to cover more territory and reduce the time the interceptors need to reach a UFO or the mission carriers to reach destination and return. Saves you game time as well. It does not matter to keep a nation Happy where your base is so much. I had 1 base at the Revolutionary countries from the start of the game but I couldn't make them Exuberant happy until the 6th month when everyone else was Exuberant :P

Well... Its fun to think as effectively as possible in this game. What you gain? Game play time reduced! ;D

Hints: Think how to cover a sphere's surface with the number of bases you want effectively, but watch out how game mechanics (continental land coverage, nation borders, ufo lost at sea etc) influence the best placement of your base.

You will realize soon enough through the game mechanics as they reveal themselves to you while you play, if your base is in a good spot or not.

But after all its a game! ^^ Just enjoy and have fun wherever you put your bases!

Not the answer I was looking for, thanks for the reply though.

I know long before 2.3 came out someone had figured out the optimal spots to put your bases but I can't find the topic anymore.  I don't have enough time to play through and trial and error it.  I just want a list of the best spots to put your bases for the best coverage.

My favs. Three interceptor/infantry bases located at mediterran, Cuba and Vietnam. Offbase radars at south africa, south america and australia. Just this gives me about 90% coverage of populated areas.

1) Budapest
2) Denver
3) Yinchuan (China)
4) Cuiaba (Brasil)
5) Alice Springs (Australia)

I am thinking to build a base in Siberia and Africa but for now I only use Radars and SAMs there.

Hehe too much sea around and I was using the "luring" UFOs tactic to shoot down harvesters but i was losing them to the sea. So I decided to use a city with more land mass around. Budapest also is my favorite European city! ;)

france (western tip), south africa (near madagascar), near lake baykal, west indonesia, new zealand, central america (panama), marshall islands, and the tip of antarctica near south america.

i usually start with Himalayan or Tibet HeadQuarters, then a Caspian Base, after that a Middle Eastern Base, and later elsewhere...

To be more explicit:

1- Down UFO.
2- Disassemble it.
3- Depending on the type of UFO, there is a chance you get an Alien Detection item.  Larger UFOs tend to yield more stuff.  This is defined in one of the .ufo files.
4- Research Alien Materials, if you haven't already.
5- Research Alien Detection.

Then you can build an Advanced Radar building in a base.  It is not an 'upgrade' in the RTS sense, but a new building (and one that does not require the original radar building to operate).

You can work out (and modify, if you like) the research tree by poking in the .ufo files -- the dependencies are there, not hardcoded in some .c file.

About c files, i forgot to uncheck make maps in the compiler! That's why it took really long (about 14 hours) to compile and still didn't finish!

Back to the game: I can modify c files as easily as easy syntax files, but only if i know what to write... ;D

Done compiling, researched everything (i got lucky on the 1st harvester), but got kind of bored right now...

Everything?    I suspect that you mean 'everything available until you encounter more stuff'... and I'd be surprised if you've finished the Stingray research already unless you've cheated to make it far faster.

Off-hand, you need the Needler to unlock the Coilgun, and you may not have met Shevaars and Bloodspiders yet, either.

No needlers, but with bloodspiders, unlocked all possible interceptors (i think, last one needs 5500000 c), but still got bored, because there isn't any unknown research proposals yet... So i'm bored!
