Discussion / Re: How many bases can you purchase?
« on: July 17, 2010, 02:27:04 am »
Well... Its fun to think as effectively as possible in this game. What you gain? Game play time reduced! ;D

Hints: Think how to cover a sphere's surface with the number of bases you want effectively, but watch out how game mechanics (continental land coverage, nation borders, ufo lost at sea etc) influence the best placement of your base.

You will realize soon enough through the game mechanics as they reveal themselves to you while you play, if your base is in a good spot or not.

But after all its a game! ^^ Just enjoy and have fun wherever you put your bases!

philosophical ;D.
But as a genuine engineer I need a hard practical example for better implementation of this theoretical model ;D

(Chapter 4 of art of war): http://www.sonshi.com/sun4.html

Silverfox14 can you give a small example how you think something should be changed in-game right now to be closer on the "spirit" of the book?

Very very interesting approach.

I confirm the same problem. But I don't have any logs, at least yet. I will try to get one.

Well if you wield one laser and plasma pistol and shoot with any of them, at least it looks like the soldier shoots with both ;D hehe

1) On easy level if you manage to have all nations Exuberant you get maximum around 950,000 credits. That is enough to pay monthly expenses for 4 bases. I have built 6 bases so far, so I cannot answer what is the maximum limit. By my experience so far 8 bases should be enough to cover the whole globe with advanced radars. If not less than 8... ;)

2) Yes. You can build anywhere you want but try to keep the bases as widely spread as possible to cover more territory and reduce the time the interceptors need to reach a UFO or the mission carriers to reach destination and return. Saves you game time as well. It does not matter to keep a nation Happy where your base is so much. I had 1 base at the Revolutionary countries from the start of the game but I couldn't make them Exuberant happy until the 6th month when everyone else was Exuberant :P

Discussion / Re: Some gameplay questions
« on: July 15, 2010, 07:50:59 pm »
Hmm, LOL i never thought of that!!! In my case I have 5 fully built bases globally and I keep 8 soldiers in each base (40 soldiers total). Because those bases are widely spread, I do not need more than 2-3 hours to fly to the scene, clean the bugs and return. It never happened yet to attack my base while my soldiers are out in a 2 to 7 hour window.

It could be handy to keep the lightly injured Soldiers (always take heavily injured soldiers in missions because when you heal them with medikit that is actually faster than hospital care) at bay for small missions unless there is a harvester-like attack. There is no need to attack a scout or fighter with more than 4-5 soldiers. The attacks in base use maximum 7-8 alliens and most of the times I have seen 5 attacking. So with 3 soldiers you should be fine and you could deal with them quickly in case they attack the base while your team is out on a mission.

Still by my experience it rarely happens. So keep 8 soldiers on each base but try to spread your bases across the globe for faster missions. Saves you game time as well.

TC, I am using Kubuntu 10.04  and I am trying to compile it as well (running on both a laptop with nvidia 9600M and a virtualbox).
I will share any findings or errors I have when I am confident I can give clear descriptions of any successes/errors I have that have not been dealt with already on wiki or forum or google search.
Keep in there buddy!  8)

@dingoperson BEST OF LUCK! :D
@Lew Yard squad-level tactical sim will never die! ;) Turn-based AI's are, at least until now, better and easier to develop than real-time based. Although I do recall that X-Com Apocalypse when real-time mode was chosen, the aliens were hiding and shooting behind walls almost with the same AI realism like in turn based game.

I will definitely try to contribute on every aspect of the game I can, but first I am trying to compile it on Kubuntu 10.04 which proves to be a little tricky but as soon I manage to do it, I will start serious contributing! I have low hopes I can do it on a VirtualBox but what the hell, I love challenges and if I make this happen that would be awesome...

Keep the /cheers coming below, forum!  8)

Really, like I'd want the screen to suddenly get taken over by these messages.
Wow this is either Miley Cyrus talking or Eurogamer Reviewer! (no offense just joking hihi ;D but seriously i LOVE those mail screens ;D)

Lepidopterist I could reply to all the weird things you found but I decided that would be waste of time since, at the bottom line you do seem to like this game, admit it! ;)

Very few points you have must agree but some of your points are so emotionally expressed I cannot tell what your point is in the end. One advice: when you do not agree with something if you want to make a clear point, suggest an alternative instead of talking of car design ;D.

As I said I agree with some of your points like the load/save accessibility and the no need for workers/scientists screen (although I see a very useful future goal to include stats for them... After all some scientists are better on researching laser pistols and other on dissecting aliens, same for the workers, others are better on disassembling stuff than making rifles, which might be cool if its not a big hassle for the devs).

But for most of the points you try to make (even those that agree with you), they are expressed with so much emotional negativism that I really lose any interest to try to understand what you mean in the end! :D

Try to make some clear suggestions how to improve the gameplay in what you think is wrong instead of expressing why it makes you feel bad emotionally.

I cannot argue with your personal view of things. But I can and its fruitful to  argue on terms of usability, friendliness and conceptional design.
