I just installed the current nightly and the opening screen does not respond to input at all.  Only clue is that it says in the console "switch grab input off".  I mean it detects the mouse because tool-tips pop up and there is hover highlighting, but the callbacks (or whatever)  don't run.

AFAIK 2.6 is currently in an unplayable state due to the new UI being worked on.

2.6 is now considered 'playable'. If you can live with a few workarounds and a mixture of old and new , that is. At least I would be interested in the points where playability is broken.

If the startup screen doesn't react, you have to delete your keys.cfg (known bug).

Is the campaign playable? By that I mean can I hire and assign scientists, which was the thing that made it a no go previously...

You can. But you have to click the quarters building to get the menu.

Cool. Will give it a spin once my latest 2.5 game ends in horrible death for all, as per usual.
