Heh. In that case, maybe the selection-by-location should be loosened until more maps are available—I'll grant that that could lead to "WTF?" moments as trendy discotheques start popping up in the Sahara, but I feel like the "oh god, not this map again" feeling is one of UFO:AI's biggest weaknesses.

Dangerous words!
The alien materials thing isn't even a code change, you can change it yourself in base/ufos/research.ufo (to change how many materials things cost to produce) or base/ufos/components.ufo (to change what you get from a single disassembly, and how long it takes). Given how frequently being able to pick base defenders has been requested, though, I'd guess that that one is far from straightforward (since if it were it'd have been done already).
