Laser turrets -- do I have to equip these?

Hey ho.

I just built my first base defense laser turret, and when I click on the building, the "Equip defense weapons" window opens.  It shows that there is one empty weapon slot under the "laser defenses" tab.  I can't see what I can install there, however. 

Do I have to equip the turret?  If so, with what?

What you constructed is merely the emplacement.
You have to build the weapon itself in a workshop and then install it.
Think you might be able to buy them after a really long while, though. Not exactly sure since I've yet to find some of the more high-tech equipment in the shop.

Suggest you use a large workshop, though.
From what I remember, assembly takes a while.
