Backpacks and heavy weaponry anims
« on: May 28, 2010, 06:47:34 pm »
1. Animation for carrying heavy weapons from the hip...think how Miniguns and flamers are carried in Fallout 3

2. Backpack models attached to the back of a soldier. What backpack is attached depends on the armor or weapon equipped. Light armors get light backpacks. Jump armor gets a jetpack (can't equip heavy weapons in this armor). Equipping a heave flamethorwer defaults your backpack to one with a gas container. Equiping a missile launcher results in a backpack with missile puches.
Equipping a gattling gun (in multi or skirmih) and you get a giant ammo box on your back.

This is indeed, as legandman said, a great idea, and it seems it wouldn't be too hard to do...

But while Armour backpack size variations are a simple matter of model work, the weapon specific backpacks might be harder.
Not that I can think of a way to do it, it just might get a little... hacky, you know?

edit:

BUT WAIT! the flamer is fuelled by cannisters attached to the bottom of the flamer. Now, if your suggesting a HEAVY FLAMER... *Drools* WELL! that's a different story!

Size-wise the current one might as well be a heavy flamer :P
It's really huge.

Now hip-carried heavy weapons might not be useful in the campaign, but for mods and skirmish :D

Good point, but still, I can picture bigger!  ;)

I don't know much about animating, hip-carrying animations also shouldn't be too hard.
thinking about it, It should be easier that the backpacks.

I'm waiting to see if Winter likes this  ;D

No sense to start moddeling a heavy flamer or heavy plasma cannon or gattling gun without the appropriate animations for it.

Hm...another possibility springs to mind...heavy weapons carried like a bazooka...think Heavy Bolter from WH40K: Chaos Gate.

Rather than spending more effort on human based weaponry, I'd rather see some more alien weapons. That's what this game is all about, after all. I think the human arsenal is too big as it is (as I've said several times before).

Sure, more alien weapons too.

I'm campaining for more carry animations since it enables a larger variety of weapon, and makes them visually more distinctive.

And about the human arsenal - a lot of people would disagree with it being too small.
I knew some people who modded games with 300+ weapons (overkill much?) and it's still not enough for them.
Also the game isn't about alien weapons, last time I checked. :P

Well, that's kind of my point. There are too many human weapons and too few alien weapons.

Isn't technicly any weapon human create a human weapon? Even if it's re-engineerd from alien tech?

Weapons made by aliens for aliens will not have the ergonomics or the functionality of weapons made by humans for humans.

Regarding alien weapons - are there plans for more? Or are you talking different version with the same basic principles (like M-16 and AK-47 are two different humans weapons)

Maybe some sort of acid thrower or sumtin?

may be some sort of plasma "flamethroyers"? or even better, human weapons adapted for aliens? For later stages of game, they already adapt aircrafts.

We had a plan for some sort of alien missile weapon, and of course psi weaponry. Alien-based models of human weaponry could work as well.

Alien-based models of human weaponry

What? Because we assimilate their advance tech, they go and assimilate ours? that sounds crazy...

Cool, but crazy.

Why crazy? They start invasion, meet with a repulse and start to discover science of mankind and our weaponry.

That said, they wouldn't actually "upgrade" to human technology, because human technology is inferior to alien technology. But they could make their own versions of some human weaponry that performed much better by mixing in their own technology.
