How do I get money?

How do I get money?  Is there a consequence to going broke?  I don't know where funding comes from, and the wiki page doesn't exist.

Sorry, I meant to say:  The nations budget money to PHALANX on the first of every month.  The amount they pay is dependent upon the performance of the organization as it relates to intercepting alien attacks and saving taxpayer lives.  I believe the statistics button will show you some relevant information there.

Other ways to make money are to produce items in workshops and sell them, and to sell UFOs and looted weapons and items from missions.

There is no direct consequence in going broke, but if you are, you will not be able to keep your base(s) operational, so you won't be able to fight the alien thread back suficient, so the nations get unhappy with you, so your budget is cut and finally you will loose the game.
