apt-get won't work on RedHat-like systems. He will have to use up2date or yum instead. Or - the best way - to manually compile and install SDL + ttf.

From the looks of it, you may not have the binary ATi drivers installed correctly. The standard drivers that come with Ubuntu won't handle the 3D in the game correctly (I've been there and done that).

Check the Ubuntu forums for help setting up the binary drivers (or PM me since I run Ubuntu too).

Ubuntu is Debian-based, like more and more distributions these days. :)
