May I Suggest These About Ranks
« on: January 08, 2009, 07:24:45 am »
Hi,

This is not a bug nor anything. I have played UFOAI since v1 and now on v2.2 and v2.3 (R21433).

I have adv to a few Senior Warrant Officers and i thnk Lieutanent (cannot rmbr, cos i play X-force, UFOAI and X-com all together. lol) and realised that the rank structure and way of leveling up can be modified.

1) Rank / Promotions not based on just nos of soldiers u have..... practically, most of us work with just the usual "elite squad" of 8 (for me that is, since its wat the current Dropship can hold max).

If u upped kills and scenarios enough, u can get new promotions.
I recommend that ranks be based on 2 Max skills attained and total skill points.
Eg - 2 Skills must attain say 25 (for specialisation) and total skill points be some 200 (average of 20 over 10 skills) to attain a certain rank.

Next.....

2) Maybe we can consider adopting more ranks?? I am recommending this:
(All Cats in Descending Order)
From the NCO (Non commissioned Officers):

Sergeant Major of the Phalanx
First Sergeant
Master Sergeant
Staff Sergeant
Sergeant First Class
Sergeant
Corporal First Class
Corporal
Private First Class
Private
Recruit

Then move on to Warrant Officers:
Senior Warrant Officer
Master Warrant Officer
First Warrant Officer
Second Warrant Officer

Then finally making it to the Commissioned Officers Cat:
Field Marshal of the Phalanx (Or Supreme Commander if you wish)
General
Lieutenant General
Major General
Brigadier General
Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel
Major
Captain
First Lieutenant
Second Lieutenant

The picture of the rank can be something like from this - Look at US or the UK version: (Maybe replace the crown with an UFO? Lol, and should really make every officer's rank nice - Esp the Supreme Commander's)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranks_and_insignia_of_NATO_Armies_Officers

This way, you have 15 Officers' Ranks and 10 NCO Ranks to climb (excluding the silly Recruit / Rookie as you may call it.)

The NCO ranks inspired by WW1, 2 and US Army, WO ranks inspired by my Singapore Army, and the Officers' rank is US and Singapore inspired. :)

PS: I still dun like to call someone a Rookie - Stick to a standard military grade.

What do u all thnk?

I liked your suggestion odie, but I believe that:

I) there are too much ranks in your suggestion and some names are kinda boring (too many "First Class") or not "Phalanx-like";
II) we should create a new "military hierarchy" based on all armies of the world and with brand new insignias;
III) a "recruit rank" does not seems to be applicable, since we expect to hire professional soldiers from Earth and not "soldiers on training".

SORRY if I said something stupid: I am beginner.  ::)

Sugna,

No problem. No offense at all. lol. This is afterall a discussion. Brainstorming should never throw ideas or suggestions away aniwae. :)

1) & 2) Well, i agree, but thats for a start. Maybe not first class, something like junior and senior? Lol. I dunno. Ranks can be militarised and boring as i know it as it is already. But i do think if multiple ranks = fun. Cos its fun to actually see ur soldier go up a rank, and able to go up REALLY high. lol. (Call me a Rank-Hungry Crazie dude).

3) Ah well, they are recruits after all. lol. In Phalanx. :P

in the field no matter what your rank is... 2nd liuetenant or private.... if its your first go around you are a rookie or as they called me a greenie....  that has been pretty standard for over 100 years....

when you are a first timer no one gives a damn if you like being called that or not... I think we should stick with rookie for the first rank

Hi,

firstly I would like to say that I like this game very much and the main problem of the game is that it is too short for playing. ;-)

I have some more suggestions about army and ranks. I think that if soldiers are not people who only eat, drink and watch tv - they are training (imagine that you are soldier for fighting with aliens - you are eating crisp in front of tv?). If they are training they waste ammo but improve their skills. Maybe there should be some options in training: no training (skills go down, morale down, no ammo waste), basic (skills and morale at the same level, little cost of ammo), normal training and hard training. There should be also possibility of sending soldier for example for sniper training or ranger training (physical and mental training) or special forces training (improving using of assault guns), explosives training, tactic training (for squad leaders), medical training and many more (and can give you this many more) - which not only improves some skills but also makes this skills growing faster in the base after training (good training it is not only training but also saying on what you need to have more attention). Of course soldier on the training is outside the base and he is unavailable for missions for a month or 2 weeks - depending on training.
And of course the highest rank is the guy with the highest mental skills. But if there is such guy rest of people gets also some ranks fr skills and trainings that they have.

Killing an alien makes more confident with using gun on action so it also improves skills.

I think that there should be possibility of improving existing gun. So if I found Gauss Gun and I like it I can get Gauss Gun A1 Gauss Gun A2 (like American M16, cause Gauss Gun +1 is not good idea).

What do you think about this ideas? I can try (I don't have experience in such programming) to implement them.
