3D Geoscape default for 2.2.x ?
« on: March 11, 2008, 01:33:17 am »
Just a quick question -- shall we make the 3D Geoscape default for the 2.2 branch? I think it's quite stable now, and much better than the 2D version?

it isn't looking that good in 2.2 imo - this should change for 2.3

Really? I always play with the 3D geoscape on 2.2 -- I find the 2D one not nearly as useful, and a bit buggy. Framerate drops to 2-3 FPS sometimes when using it after reading UFOPedia, sort of like the "Cyrillic UFOPedia" bug.

What problems are you experiencing with it, Mattn?

Thanks,

The 3D geoscape works fine for me as well. I vastly prefer it over the 2D one.

with new HUD of geoscape 2D looks weird and nonproportional :-(
May be it should not be stretched, but be with vertical margins? Or even with old, 2.2 HUD?

So, what's the word from on-high? I think the 3D geoscape would be an excellent step towards 2.2.1, a project that I still carry close to my heart :D

2.2.1 is only a bug fix release, it is not meant to include new features. So IMO, we should not change the default value (be it 3D geoscape or any other option value).

I agree with mattn, it should only be added in 2.3, when 3D geoscape background will be added. Anyway, anyone wanting to use 3D geoscape can turn the option on if he wants to use it in 2.2 or 2.2.1.

The 2D geoscape in 2.2 locks up, at least for me. So this would be a bugfix.

Nah, the bug would still be there for those who play on the 2D geoscape by choice (and there are some).

Anyway, I actually thought the 3D geoscape would be defaulted in 2.2, before it was released...

What do you mean ? I don't think I know this bug ??? Is there a bug report ?

No bug report yet, since I haven't played with the 2D scape for a looong while :P But it is in essence this:
Quote
I find the 2D one not nearly as useful, and a bit buggy. Framerate drops to 2-3 FPS sometimes when using it after reading UFOPedia, sort of like the "Cyrillic UFOPedia" bug.
It happened to me with the 2.2 release, if I tried to read all the initial emails at once. If I read one, then went back to the Geoscape, then read another, etc, it was less likely to become unstable. But, since I noticed the 3D one was not affected by the bug, AND much more useful, AND cooler-looking :) I stopped bothering with the 2D one and never filed a report.

I'll look into filing a bug for this...
