Its in fact more a patchwork than a clean model - criticism is welcome. It is far from being complete but If this kind of model can make it into the game I would need to know if it should be more detailed or not. I will work it for my own pleasure anyway.

I have no talent in texturing.

Im using blender - this is a smoothed model.

The crazy lighting is caused by funny normals - some of your faces are 'pointing' inward, while others are pointing outwards.

Some quick notes...

- There's nowhere the driver or gunner can see out of.
- It doesn't look like it can spin the turret, it seems like it's hardened into the tank shell.
- It doesn't look like the handles are for a hatch, or any way to egress the vehicle.
- I like the treads, I think, the lightning makes the wheels look really wierd.  Most tanks though don't have a consistent set of wheels across the entire tread though.  Two main wheels turn the tread while the rest keep it in place and rolling along easily.  On the front they should have a definitive width instead of seeming to merge into the body.

Looks like a really nice start, though. :)

I added 2 shafts so driver and gunner can see

created a hatch; i think now its obvious

the tank is meant to be a tank destroyer - generally tank destroyers cannot spinns the turret; only the cannon on a narrow angle

regarding the treads; I cant really figure out how to broaden the front an bottom wheels without having them going out of the caterpillar...still thinking about it

I still didnt bother myself learning how to use the lights; but thats planned.

feedback would be appreciated; thx.

The tank has a very very high 'profile', i.e. its body and turret stacked up are very very high. It would be very easy to hit by other tanks. I recommend you try and drop that severely, or it won't be believable as a high-tech tank.

See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Indian_Army_T-90.jpg

http://www.futurefirepower.com/wp-content/photos/Merkava_4.jpg

These are modern-day tanks with fairly low profiles. Tanks in the future will try to lower that even further, and employ stealth technology and new weapons systems (coilguns, anyone?) to try and achieve superiority.

A low, stealthy, coilgun-equipped tank would make me very happy. :P

Regards,
Winter

PS. Your tank also has a problem with straight edges. Modern tank armour is always sloped to improve its effectiveness.

I have amended the design according to your recommandations. The tank is now lower, a little bit smaller and smoother, with a more laminated platings design. I still have to clean some flaws.

I was initially "trying" to imitate the Jagpanther tank destroyer from WWII, that's why it had a high profile.

The two below pictures are with a random - quite ugly camo I have found on google, just to get the big picture:

didnt figure out yet why the camouflage doesnt go on the top of the tank

im gonna take a look on the coilgun

The redesigned tank looks a lot more dangerous in my opinion. Good job.

The reason why the camo doesn't cover the top properly is because the model isn't UV-mapped right. You need to UV-map the top and bottom separately from the sides.

Winter

ok improved camo
reduced ploycount to 3000 (blender says VE 2806 & 3066) (is that ok ?) - without wheels polycount is 2000 but I have no idea what to use else than cilenders (tracks are ok)
corrected major flaws
that's what we ve got

regarding the coilgun I have no idea how to design it. I read a little bit, there should be acceleration chambers somewhere, in the cannon or in the tank ?

Anyway if the model is satisfactory for Winter I will submit it.

Do I have to put shadows & lights on it or is this handled by the game engine ?

It will need some proper texturing by a texture artist. I'll be starting a thread later on with a bunch of untextured models, so please post it there once the thread's up.

Notes on the 3D Model and optimization for in-game use:

Good start, but before you go unwrap the UVs and go through all that hassle:

Remove the treads, they'll be handled by a texture, same goes for the wheels.  Remember that polycount is an issue, it always is.  Where a minute detail could be handled by something else, let it.  Otherwise for high-polygonned pre rendered graphics you'd want to render the wheels.

If you might, you could consider taking a look at these as reference on the US Armies MCS system.

Infantry Carrier:

Israeli Merkava Mark IV

The People's Army Type 99 0 (China)

Non line of sight mobile cannon:

I hope these help you out in your quest.  Whenever  I have to make up something new and futuristic, I always try to draft it out first, so I can work out all my bugs, and then I work from that.

You may consider removing or adding new features, such as a new type of track system battle hardened in the Chinese civil war, of 2050something or even a new system based on gatteling railguns, which I've seen drawings of, yikes!

I need to get into serious modelling lessons to reach the quality of your mentionned models

Thx for the tip regarding wells, im gonna post a version without them then. I consider this model finished even if it is not totally futuristic, instead of amending it massively It would prefer creating a futuristic model from scratch. Anyway in some developping countries you can still find old tank models (cherman, T-60, etc...) this model could be used in that case.

I will definitly look on your references for my next model.

Thx very much and regards,
