they could be handy as map objects, too - but maybe we can even implement turrets - would be cool - the only thing needed would be a tag file for turrets.

Maybe they could be used as defence turrets in strategic positions in the PHALANX base or something. It doesn't look mobile enough for anything else.

The turret brings up a whole side of things we haven't really concretely discussed yet: useable objects. We would need a new element in the GUI to cater for these. Useable objects would be these turrets, doors, the panic button in AC, light switches, etc.
I shouldn't think we'd be having soldier-driven vehicles or the like, the maps aren't suited for them.
Anyway, this is something for the coders to think about.

I think it looks bloody excellent and we should use it. A map object seems the most logical thing to incorporate it as; an automated anti-aircraft gun on a military base or warship. It'd be easy enough to add a control chair with a computer screen in front of it, and a heat shield at the base of the barrels.

As a PHALANX anti-infantry turret, this one would be a bit overkill. It would cause huge amounts of collateral damage if pointed at anything ground-level. The same turret (with controls) and a single-barreled machine gun would be a more sensible choice for that.

Here's an interesting idea -- we could turn the little corridors between base facilities into special building sites where you could buy things like turrets, weapon lockers (part of your team might start out unarmed and unarmoured), destructable blast doors, that sort of thing. Only one building per corridor. That would make base attacks a little more interesting, and make up for the highly disproportionate number of aliens to be defeated.

Regards,
Winter

useable objects should just change the cursor when hovering - clicking such an object will use it...

Agreed. IMHO, doors would be #1 priority of these objects, as they have strategic as well as psychologic relevance.

But doors and switches tend to be in between squares. As far as I know, the cursor can only target the squares themselves.

I may be wrong but chainguns were used in the chinook transport helicopters - dont know if it is still the case.

Would be coherent I think to use the above beast as a fixed defense chaingun on the edge of the phallanx dropship.

Yes, they are cool!

I'm thinking of the robotic sentry guns in the director's cut of Aliens.
