More or better fire modes
(1/1)
breversa:
Hi everyone,
Reading a thread about weapons ranges, I wondered if some (most ?) weapons should have more fire modes.
Let me explain :
Currently, an assault rifle has 3 fire modes : single snap shot, 3-rounds burst, and autofire (20 rounds). While those fire modes make assault rifles good short/medium range weapons, they don't quite allow them to be used at longer range... as they could in real life.
For instance, an standard assault rifle practical range is 300m (about +50% if scoped), although in prone supported position aimed single shot.
So what I'm basically thinking about is "couldn't [weapon X] have an AIMED single shot fire mode" (even very costly TU-wise) ?

could you not just use a sniper rifle for this?
i like the inadequacies of the weapons because it forces you to think in a more tactical way.
in this case; making sure you send parties of soldiers out who complement each other, rather than having single super weapons and a bunch of lone rangers.
this makes the game-play much more interesting, after all, this is a game :)
cheers

Of course I'm also using sniper rifles, but I'd like my riflemen to be able to take their time, aim and shoot at long range rather than only fire bursts after bursts at medium range...
Currently the assault rifle is just a kinda beefed-up version of the SMG, while historically and technically, it is a CROSS between SMGs and long-range rifles.
Sniper rifles should still be more powerful and more precise at a longer range.
(Just to illustrate : I can hit a man-sized target at 200m with naked eye while prone with a FAMAS rifle, but I could hit 2 to 3 times farther using a proper scoped sniper rifle - and I'm no sniper. ;) )
Mattn:
there is already an attempt to add more firemodes on our patchtracker: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1710454&group_id=157793&atid=805244
feel free to add more firemodes (everything is script file driven in ufo:ai) and submit a patch

Okay, I'll have a look at it and try and write a patch. :)
