Problems with Ubuntu Linux install with Synaptic

Hi

I have the repository for UFOAI but when i try and install it in Synaptic i get the following message:

  Depends: libasound2 (>1.0.12) but 1.0.11-7ubuntu3 is to be installed
**********************************************************

Any suggestions as to how to fix this (i am pretty new to Linux).

I downloaded the packages libasound2 and libasound2-dev (versions 1.0.13) from the Debian homepage and installed them with dpkg, and the UFO installation worked fine.

The pages are:

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/libs/libasound2
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/libdevel/libasound2-dev

Choose your architecture (i386, I presume) and then a mirror.

so in a terminal i just type:

>  dpkg libasound2

and

> dpkg libasound2-dev

or is there more to it than that?

PS if i use dpkg what does  that also update what i see in Synaptic?

Ok - that worked fine - thanks

well sort of - it allowed me to install the game but it won't run

it just kicks me out of X and i have to log in again - i had a similar problem with another game in windows which i got around by changing the resolution to 1280x1024 in a config file - however i can't find a config file with this in

any suggestions?

hmmm
just realised that installing those .deb sound packages has stopped all my sound from working - i think it must have uninstalled something

did you have a similar problem and if so how did you fix it?

I have a fully functional sound system :? I'm using Ubuntu Edgy.

Have you used dpkg -i libasound...? or just dpkg libasound...?

i think i used -i, though i may have used it without the i first but nothing happened

maybe i have different osund card and sound packages insralleed?

using edgy here too, was getting the same dep break and installing those packages worked.
