Can you do some tests to help track down the problems here:

First try running the game with sound disabled:
-> from a "command prompt" go to the ufo:ai install
directory and try "ufo +set snd_init 0 +set developer 1"

If the game still crashes report back with the
ufoconsole.log file. If not then read on:

First try experimenting with other sound drivers:
* "ufo +set snd_init 1 snd_ref dx +set developer 1"
* or "ufo +set snd_init 1 snd_ref wapi +set developer 1"

If dx and wapi drivers also fail then can you please try
intalling the latest SDL drivers:
http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.11-win32.zip

and re-test everything :)

Thanks cassiterite!

Executing with sound initialization off booted to a console
fine, but the main menu never came up. I had to go to the
(amazingly quake 2 reminiscent...) console and quit out that
way.

Executing with explicit DX sound initialization worked great
to get to the main menu.

I can try WAPI if you think that is valuable, and of course
post the ufoconsole.logs for any test path you'd like as well.

If these are known workarounds, would they be appropriate
for the wiki? I did not see them there.

I'm glad these suggestions helped.

It is strange that explicitly setting sound to the DX driver
helped since I believe this is the default driver on windows.

If you can replicate any startup crash please upload a
ufoconsole.log (or multiple logs for different crashes using
different drivers etc). There are probably some bugs in the
windows sound drivers (and most of the devs use Linux so any
hints as to what is going on here would be useful). The
ultimate would be running the game with settings you know
cause it to crash in a debugger then posting some output
from that.. but that is a lot of work to go to.

Will look at including some of this info in the wiki and
also the ufo:ai manual (currently being written).

this should be fixed now - and will be included in the upcoming patch

maybe due to the reason that the sound renderer (at least the directX one) need the window handle - and this was destroyed and immediatly set up again due to a failure in our init function. thus the sound renderer would point to a wrong window handle.

note: this is just a guess - but please try the upcoming patch (patch for rc6 or rc7 - not sure about the name) and reopen if this issue is stille existent.
