The ammuniton objects for the rifles and SMGs should be
called "Magazines" and not clips.

THank you for your tip, but 'magazines' is too long. Any
other options? Why is 'clips' not correct? Why is it used so
often, then?

Well, I wasn't sure so I looked it up. If you believe
Wikipedia then clips is indeed incorrect. Perhaps we could
call them "mags"... I know not the best ... maybe someone
else can suggest an alternative? Maybe just plain ammo ?

In short, a clip is a device used to hold loose ammuniton
together and charge a magazine. A magazine holds ammunition
which the firearm feeds out of directly. Wikipedia has a
reasonably good entry explaining it in detail:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magazine_(firearm)

In situations where magazine is too long, I should think
that "mag" would be a completely acceptable substitution.

As to it's continued misuse, I can only guess.

True, and I think that there should be much more ammo in the
starting base. Think about it - can you imagine a military
base with just one-two magazines for the several guns that
the game starts with?

If jnyjny really wants to be pedantic then the ammo holders
for the pistols and shotguns should be called magazines too.

However, right or wrong, "clips" is a very common term, and
can't possibly create any confusion. No-one is going to
misunderstand what is meant, and infact clips is probably
more instantly understandable to most that "mags".

You say pedantic like it's a bad thing. Using the term
"clips" when you mean magazines merely because "it's very
common" is juvenile at best. What I'm asking for is only a
semantic change that will have a positive effect on the
perception of the game by people who know the correct usage
of the word and have zero effect on people who don't know
the difference ( and may actually educate them as a
side-effect ). This is on the whole of it a fantasy game,
and when you jolt the user out of the "zone" with incorrect
terminology that can be corrected it makes the game seem
like it was developed by 11 year olds ( apologies to 11-year
olds everywhere ).

As far as the pistol ammo goes; yes, for the most part
semi-automatic pistols are magazine fed ( revolvers can
often be fed from speed-loaders and moon clips, but as of
yet the game does not include the revolver hand-gun type ).

Shotguns on the other hand are generally fed from a tube
magazine which is non-detachable. There are several types
of shotguns which are fed from detachable box magazines of
various types, but I suspect that it also outside the scope
of the game as it stands today.

Clips were used in old rifles during WWII, the full name of
them were stripper clips. In those the magazine chamber was
build into the rifle and the clip was used to load the mag.
The correct item used used in modern weapons is a mag /
magazine as pointed out by jnyjny.

I'd have to agree, the name "clips" struck me as odd.
It is not uncommon to hear, but mostly for pistols. I have
only heard it in movies and never by people who work with
the stuff, except for band clips.
